Handed Notice in but No Other Job Lined Up!
Discussion
As title says, sharing here because this is not something I have ever done before! I have always had another job lined up.
This time I just needed out. Final straw yesterday when boss berated me that we were out of stock of consumables even though I hadn't been in work for the previous 11 days!
Our workload has increased tenfold in last few weeks but staffing hasn't. Too much to go into here but suffice to say after being berated by about a few things yesterday with no chance to explain why situations had arisen I decided enough was enough.
I went in today and spoke to him and made it clear about how disappointed I was with the way he handled things yesterday and explained why and that I thought he knew me well enough to know I have high standards and if they are slipping there is likely a reason for it.
So better start job hunting. I hope I don't regret this

It’s a hard decision but sometimes one that has to be made.
Out of interest what sort of company is it you work for? There may still be options to speak to HR and see if there is a way for you to be moved internally away from the manager? I guess you probably crossed this and realised there was no realistic escape without leaving?
I guess the good news is it’s a fairly active time of year for recruitment, so hopefully you’ll have something lined up before your notice period ends.

It's tough. My mate left his old role in May last year. It took him a few months to find a well paid IT contract. After the 3 month contract, he left and has been out of work ever since. (Middle of December.) He's not found a contract since and has just accepted a perm role this week after a 5 month lay off which is about £10k per year less than he was on last year. His contract money has all but ran out apart from what he needs to cover his tax and his redundancy money has reduced to an amount that means if he didn't land this job, he would have been in big trouble. Lots of stress for him.
Just wondering if you could have spoken to your Doctor about the situation? If you feel strongly enough to leave, then maybe the pressure and stress you are under was too much. You could have taken some time out while being paid which would mean you could look for work while still being employed which seems to be easier. It could have also bought some time to prepare negotiations with your current employer so you could have listed your issues and see if there was a way to change the situation.

I was signed off earlier in year for severe labyrinthitis. I was told if I had any more absence HR would be implementing a written warning.
My husband is facing major surgery next month. They won't give compassionate leave so I have had to book holiday and take unpaid leave.
I am lucky that I am a ltd company so can do locum work which is always plentiful, just not sure it is a route I want to go down unless I have to.

Ah OK, fair enough. Sorry to hear that. It was just an option worth noting. My partner is also awaiting a date for major surgery but I'm lucky enough that the company I work for are pretty flexible and are allowing me to travel around arrangements and work from home when needed. Sounds like yours is not so accommodating. My husband is facing major surgery next month. They won't give compassionate leave so I have had to book holiday and take unpaid leave.

You wont.
One of the harshest lessons I've learned in my professional career is that you have to look out for yourself, because no-one else will do it for you. I used to have a job in which I let myself be abused by my employer (and other staff), but that's a long story not fit for PH.
Forget HR, they are there to protect the bosses and the company from you and will happily sell you down the river to do it.
If you can do temp work in your profession that's good if it means you don't have to stress about paying the bills whilst you look for another permanent position.
By the sounds of it, you'll probably regret not doing it sooner.

The challenge is actually getting a Drs appointment for a sicknote. It’s nearly impossible to get any appointments in my area call up 7:59.59am or 8:00:00 am and it’s a 45 min call hold only to be told fully booked today and also for the next two weeks, if you want to come down to the surgery and wait for a cancellation - me I need to be in work I cannot simply sit in the Dr surgery all day long waiting for an appointment that may or may not happenJust wondering if you could have spoken to your Doctor about the situation? I did it last November. Was on 3 month notice so not too drastic. I had been trying to find a new job for about the past 12 months but not having much luck. Just had enough of the stress and BS.
2 months into my notice I had two offers. One of which from a company I had been interested in for some time. I now work for them; so worked out perfectly.

Only did it once. Hated my new boss and it was mutual. Walked out.
Turned out to be the best decision I ever made. Magic did not happen but in three weeks I had a new job which was ok, bur more importantly gave me a career path.
Good luck -I think you will do just fine as you have thought about your alternatives.

I did the same thing about 10 years ago, abusive boss with a chip the size of "Rhodesia" on his shoulder! Last straw for me was when he called me to inform me that me and my staff where a bunch of useless
s and that he was going to sack the f
king lot of us!
I went home, collected all the stuff I had belonging to the company, went into the office and dropped it all in a pile on his desk with a note that read "I quit! - Useless
!"
Turned out for the best, was a nervous couple of weeks and in interviews explaining what had happened was difficult but proved worthwhile.
Good luck and chin up BexVN, I am sure it will come good.

So sorry to read of your woes.
You are much missed on the animal thread.
Hope things sort themselves out soon.
I think you did the right things leaving.
