Son Looking To Join Police Force

My lads looking at joining the Police after his A levels at 18 as opposed to going to Uni as he just wants to get out and work and is very keen on Policing.

Anyone else had a kid in a similar position that's recently joined up or is considering ?

I read somewhere that from 2020 you’ll need a degree or join on an apprenticeship that involves getting the degree. Am I mistaken?

Degree is to go in at Junior Detective level i thought but to start as a regular its 2 A levels but i could of course be wrong

Also be very aware of the intake policies of non whites, sorry to sound harsh but my father was plod and told me about this years ago, it must be only be worse now.

A good applicant will still be alright, but it is worth bearing in mind, and certainly is a factor in civvy plod jobs.

Not wanting to hi-jack but my son is in exactly the same position and has had differing advice from "just apply online" through to get a part time job and sign up as a special for a year before applying.


Any suggestions?

My lad wants to join at 18 (providing he gets the required amount of A levels of course) and is interested in Armed Response.

He knows he'll have to do some time on the beat and training but has his sights set on firearms.

Have to see what happens.....

Friend of mine has been applying for the Police for years, got no-where, - until he stated on the form that he was an ethnic minority... then got an interview straight away.

Read my post and you will see that.

I found this from my father and ex PC and also from talking to him about application forums and reading adverts in papers.

One was a Muslim woman urging you to join the police. I mean, could you make an advert more biased of you tried?

cousin has just retired from the force as detective sergeant

reckons there is very little chance of promotion these days through the ranks , must go in as graduate or be one of the characteristics they're actively recruiting these days , lbgt , black , you get the picture

He should try working as a Special Constable first; I was hell bent on joining the police and worked as a Special for 2 years and that put me off...with other SC colleagues of mine, they couldn't wait to join up full time! So it'll make his decision...possibly!

What recent, personal experience do you have re: police staff positive discrimination? (because that appears to be what you're alleging) The chances of your father having any real insight into HR policy are slim at best, unless he was, in fact, staff, and involved in recruitment.

Personally I think the specials is a great idea. It opens your eyes to it.

If you have a look at the forces website, it should say what is needed.

It is going down the degree route. Either you need one when you join, or you work towards on during your probation.

You can apply for both specials and PC at the same time. It's a long process for PC (I applied in 2017 and still not started).

I think if you have worked within the system for many ears you hear whispers and are aware of policy.

I am not saying any white male applying would be discriminated against, But I do not think it is a secret that ethnic minority applicants would be far more likely to succeed if they are good enough, over a white male one.Nothing wrong with that per se, merely pointing out that applying for the police is perhaps not as clear cut as you might think

Alot of people fail on the test shoot. It's not hard, if your THAT interested in firearms why don't people join a gun club first?

First hurdle will be to get him through his A levels and then in the door at 18.

Not sure he is ready for rejection but will point out to him its not a 'given'.

His chosen career path can come at a later stage especially as like most teenagers he may change his mind !
