at 35 I'm looking at the possibility of going to college in September to do the Carpentry and joinery course they offer.

I did do a year into a carpentry apprenticeship when I was 16 earning £25 a week but was too impatient and ended up leaving that to work full time for full time wages (a decision I do regret). Fast forward to 2015 I spent a couple of years in Norway working for the girlfriends dad at his construction company for 3 years, we did general building but mainly wood as every structure out there is timber framed, so did lot's of cladding, house building, plaster boarding, hanging doors, laying floor, installing insulation, painting, simple concrete work, basic electrical work, roof, gables, electric under floor heating (nearly every house had this).

I would really like to go down this route and am interested in earning potential, looking at Indeed, wages for carpenters doesn't look that great (I remember it being quite good for the time served guys when I did my apprenticeship). I am also interested in possibly some form of electrician course, but would prefer carpentry. I guess I'm just scoping out the potential, I have mates who are Scaffolders and Brickies earning daft money so surely Chippies aren't too far off?

Are you looking at this with a view to a job, or being self-employed?

The reason I ask is that one of my best friends does amazing carpentry work - basically all bespoke fitted wardrobes/cupboards/kitchens etc. He hasn't got any formal qualifications in carpentry, but has incredible attention to detail and does excellent work. He has a waiting list of up to a year and makes a very good living. He gets all his work by word of mouth.

If you have a couple of years practical experience, why not give it a go?

Have a look at being a trainee for a timber-framer/sips erector.. The earning potential is very good, and uses a lot of the skills you've said, I.e gables, trusses etc. I did it for 18months and enjoyed it!
