My (much) better half is looking to change job. First a little back story...

She worked for a large multinational IT company who where pretty bad to work for (by reputation among anyone in the MK Office, I won't divulge whom as per name and shame rules but it isn't difficult if you know the area and industry, lets avoid outing it please wink ). Said company downsized the MK office and sent a load of work overseas. Mrs geeks had been full time then part time for a while for health reasons and in an effort to avoid being managed out she agreed to go back to full-time only to be made redundant some 12 months later.

She originally planned to take last summer off as we were moving back into our house after being out for 12 months owing to a flood in the area. However a few days before she left she received a phone call from a local Recruitment Agency and was offered an opportunity too good to turn down on a 3 month contract. Said contract has been been renewed a few times and is set to finish in December. They keep discussing a perm role with her but she is resistant as she really doesn't want a full time perm role where she is and the likelihood of a part time role is very low, she is ok with this and thus the search for a new job is underway.

She is now looking for a "grown up" type job as she is less about a career now and more about playing with the dogs and taking some time to help care for her elderly parents, realistically she only has another 10 or so years of working left, I wont divulge her age it's just realistic, she is younger than you think and won't be at retirement age in 10 years but physical demands on her body suggest that's the most likely outcome, she was born with congenital hip dysplasia in both hips, a twisted and overly curved spine as well as that her feet were folded underneath themselves (for the sake of completeness, an air lip and cleft palate too), she would like to work in a small office, the tyoe where they take it in turns to buy the biscuits each week kind of role, preferably part time, but full time is apparently ok, as long as it's the right job. She can walk short distances and few stairs are fine, but if she had to walk up flight of stairs to a first floor everyday that would be a no go for her.

Her skills are mainly IT based, she has done Identity and Access Management for the last year or so, previous to this she did Request Management (very similar) and prior to that Major Incident Management for a big German automotive brand. She has a fanatical eye for detail, she is very process driven and where none exists it makes her giddy to start one hehe she is very well organised and is familiar with project work (as in projects, not as in the hateful MS tool) she also (and god knows why) enjoys repetitive work.

So, to the PH job collective, what sort of role should we be looking to, for her? I think she would make an excellent Resource Controller/Planner or Sales Admin but she is happy to completely leave IT (see point about grown up job, smaller office with easy access) salary isn't a massive issue for the first time in our history this is a lovely place to be for us financially, but we need to be realistic (I still have a race car to run after all driving) , no lower that £17/18k

Have you spoken to a Recruitment Agency?

A decent one will be able to have a grown up discussion and assess her realistic chances of changing industry and into what.

They'll also be able to identify her transferable skills.

With the massive shortfall of good staff in the MK area, she shouldn't have too much trouble walking into a relatively basic admin job on £20k.

I'd probably tell her to get cv's out to all the local independent recruitment agencies and see if any of them have in-house positions? Normally nice little offices..

Not yet, finding a decent local Recruitment Agency is on the to do list but previous dealings with a few suggest this could be an uphill battle, happy to take recommendations!

Interesting about the MK shortfall, I wasn't previously aware of this, but I don't work locally anymore and haven't done for some time.

CV, that's currently top of the list to do, needs a thorough refresh, anyone remember the name of the chap on here who reviews CVs for a living?
