My son has been working in a local business for a couple of years whilst he was a student. All he has from them is the original letter offering the job stating that he has no fixed hours and is expected to work the hours for which he is rota'd. Rotas are drawn up normally a week in advance but hours can be cancelled without notice if he's not needed. And, with little notice all the staff were told "no work for 2 weeks" because the owners went on holiday. During this time he's started a new job elsewhere that will conflict with the first one in a few days time.

I don't feel he owes the first employer anything and a couple of days notice is fair.

What say PH?

Yep - if zero hours all he needs to say is "i'm not available on that day" - Ideally you'd give a week's notice but in this case I'd just give the 2 days.

Ran a business that employed students in a similar way, only thing is I recognised that these contracts give flexibility in both directions.

Treat them the same way they treated him, little or no notice...bye!

What are they going to do sack him?

No but they do owe him a few hundred quid, a big chunk of which is holiday pay accrued over the summer.

As you both say, couple of days notice but I'm going to make him wait until he is paid on Friday or I can see all sorts of excuses why his holiday pay evaporates.
