Hello everyone. Long story but I’ll try to cut it short. I’ve been in my current job for just over two years. Money is decent (32+bonuses) but I started to become depressed AF on the job lately. It’s basically factory work but I just realised that the management over here is so tick that they don’t respect people at all. I am a very flexible and helpful guy, sometimes when they ring me at 6 in the morning I am in by 7 just to help them out ( on my day off of course), it is well paid so I can’t moan regarding that. I would’ve thought that favours work both ways to be fair. Recently I asked for 1 day off for a Saturday and didn’t get it because ,,someone else is already off”. People who don’t help out and stuff are off for day months (it’s 4 on 4 off) and you just have no chance to get a single day or week unless you book it well in advance. I would’ve thought that if I help out all the time I would get something in return ie : day off whenever I want it , but that’s simply not the case. Of course I had a go at the management because of this and they just getting worse with me day by day. So I made my mind up and now I know I’m gonna leave. I’m currently undergoing HGV training because this is something I always wanted to do and secondly: I don’t want to earn significantly less than what I’m on now.
Now to the question: if you were me, would you just hand your notice in as soon as you get your licence or take something like 3 months off for stress beforehand? ( it would be fully paid, and I could get some experience while driving as self employed) Running your own business is not breach of contract, but the contract states you’re not allowed to work for anyone else.
I know that handing in your notice and spending your 1 month period would be the best thing to do. However I was nice before and it didn’t get me anywhere.
What would you do ?

Go on the sick, fk ‘em. Just keep it quiet about the HGV driving on the side.

As a side note, keep us posted on how the driving goes. Always used to fancy doing the licences but the roads are so congested I think I would find it too stressful.

EDIT: on reflection, perhaps 3 months off sick is a bit much especially if you’re being fully paid (missed that bit when I first read it!) and aren’t experiencing any genuine work related stress/anxiety which means you need time off for a fresh start. You may also need references in the future.

I would keep my integrity and simply resign and then work for myself.

Going ‘on the sick’ when you are not ill is wrong.

Management may have treated you badly, I suggest next time they want you on a day off, perhaps decline politely.

I'm with Gargamel on this one. Plus, I know an illness SHOULDN'T affect future prospects, but that doesn't mean it doesn't. You're effectively pulling a three month sickie. I know I'd take that into consideration if I was a prospective employer. There are a lot of legitimate cases, but something as vague as "stress" I'd wonder how available you'd be too my business if I needed you. Legitimately it otherwise.

Defo take some time off sick if its paid.
Maybe not 3 months... sounds like you have been more than helpful and when some mis treatment has been called out , they treat you worse.

Good luck with the future :-)

Thanks for the replies so far. I get where you come from Gargamel and Crofty and that would possibly be my first choice just because I consider myself an honest a straightforward person I should probably do that. The thing is it would be a genuine reason for it, I’m currently being assessed by a counsellor about the severity of my depression. This also affects my personal life of course and a lot of alcohol abuse. I would definitely need some time off before starting anything else, but not 3 months of course.
I will probably take the rest of my holidays and when I get it just hand my notice in. That way I get the time off without destroying my future employability prospect.

On the side node: there is a thread in the commercial break subsection of this forum and that’s where my updates are going regarding this.

When you get your HGV licence will you be working for a company or self-employed? If you'll be working as an employee, many companies ask how much time you have had off sick in the last 12 months - do you really want to be telling them that you've had 3-months off sick or alternatively lying to a prospective new employer?

If it were me I'd keep my head down for three months, get the licences required to do what you want to do and then look for something else. Taking time off sick when you're not really ill and then working on the side while you're receiving sick pay sounds like a massive gamble which could backfire in so many ways.

Hi,don't want to burst your bubble ,but hgv driving,is becoming less possible self employed,if you don't supply the wagon
Plus its a job where if your delivering to rdc's you'll be treated like something on the bottom of a shoe after stepping in dog poo, treated like a simpleton and expected to Max hours for a pretty low wage in most cases

Hey OP, Kudos to you for being open about mental health issues. Do not hesitate to consider medication if that is what a doctor advises. Talking therapy, exercise, contact with friends, and avoiding booze are all great ideas, but sometimes a course of pills can help too.

This.

You can't buy integrity. You can't replace that feeling of knowing that you are the one in the right and they are the ones who flucked up.

No point in pretty 'revenge' sickness. On the other hand i would make sure that my exit interview took place and even if it didn't would ensure that not only my direct line manager received a copy of the resignation letter and exit report. "Liked the place, good job, shame that those that swing the lead are treated like royalty yet those that try to work with management and improve things are treated like dirt. Off to better pastures as a result, good luck with the future of your business."

Regional distribution centres.

In short, life draining dumps.

I turned up at escos not long ago there was actually a sign on the booking in desk saying were sorry but its a 3 to 4 hour turnaround currently.

Now that wouldnt be to bad if you were allowed to sit in your truck, but your not you have to sit in a poxy room watching a screen that tells you just how shockingly slow they are.
