Distance learning, which is better?

Looking for a bit of advice here, I work away from home a lot so to pass the time in the evenings I thought I could study.
I've got an interest in a mechanical engineering course, the courses I've seen are either SVQ or BTEC, I'm a little bit lost as which best to go with. the SVQ is a scottish qualification (where I live and work) the BTEC being the english version. are both equally recognised withing the uk primarily, and overseas?
Don't want to do the BTEC if the SVQ is the better option, or vice versa
Maybe could I be overthinking it and both are the same and accepted equally whereever?
