Automotive Design intern for my young lad
Discussion
Hi all,
My son is in his third year studying Automotive and Transport design, he has worked non-stop over the last 8 months putting his portfolio together. Now he is looking for any internships/placements opportunities, does anyone have any contacts in their industry please? It appears to be very difficult to get a foot in the door, as there are so many candidates..
He is a complete petrol head and has always wanted to be a car designer since we met Julian Thompson and Ian Callum at a Sunday Service many years ago.
Any help/ideas would be greatly appreciated..
Thanks
G

The thing that immediately springs to my mind is he should be on here himself showing the initiative and effort.
Can't beat a nice well presented letter in the post with maybe some examples. Make some time to research who the MD or relevant person in charges is and address it to them. Far better than random generic emails to HR contacts.
Get a foot in the door at any level in a company. Don't be too picky. It's easier to get a job you want from inside. This is especially important in roles where people might have a hobby or interest in the industry as competition for placings will be strong.

My immediate contacts in the industry have sadly passed away of long moved on. But if he hasn't already done so, get him to look at what's available at Ford's Dunton plant.
It is a very oversubscribed profession and he may do well to look at wider transport sectors. One that I know to be exceptionally active at the moment is Rail.
