Can any powerfully built type on here offer a weeks work experience in the summer for a youngster?

Ideally a solicitor but anything considered.

Clearly subject to interview

The person is very sharp and intelligent but happy to make tea.

London based but would travel if it’s needed.

Just reply here and I’ll PM

Thanks

Isn't the first task of work experience to find your own work experience?

I recall writing dozens of letters to local companies, but that was a quarter of a century ago...

When I went to school they had a bank of companies, mostly parents who offered the opportunities for work experience at their businesses.

I thought the point of work experience was to gain experience in your chosen profession to give you a better understanding of the job an better carrer prospects for that subject?

Not just whatever you can get at any random profession.

+1

Is their career target really a job making tea?

My 2 did theirs in a solicitor's practice in Coventry (accessed though one of my solicitor contacts at work) and KPMG (accessed through the Audit lead at work) respectively. She didn't become a lawyer but he did become an accountant, not an auditor.

It is. I went to try architecture in small (very nice) family firm. I discovered that I definitely did not want to be an architect (this was pre-mass computerization... ended up in IT instead

No one knows what they want to do at that age, and even if they did, work experience isn't going to be a yes/no clear cut decision which makes their mind up.

Heck, half the people out of Uni don't even know what they want to do or to follow their degree into the suitable career path.

Out of 20 friends of mine that went to Uni, I would estimate that only a few of them actually went into a career suited to their degree.

Work experience at a youngsters age (<18) just needs to be taken with a pinch of salt.

It’s a 16 year old, ideally they’d like to be a lawyer but part of the experience is to get them to see what it’s like to go to work.

Get up, dress smart, get in on time, talk to people.

I shan’t bother as most of the comments don’t come across as the kind of people who want to help others.

Didn’t used to be like this on PH.

Bit of a shame

It is very rare to find someone who knows exactly what they want to do for a career. If they do it is more than likely they will do a 'cognate' degree, i.e. one which is relevant to their chosen career - and there aren't many of those unrelated to engineering or medical based careers. Surveying (there are many types of surveyor, perhaps one for every 'type' type of person), Architect, engineer, doctor, vet are some samples.

If a youngster, such as the OP's request, knows what they want to do, then work experience is a very good call, even at 16 (especially at 16!).

Sorry OP, my firm are surveyors and I am already booked with work experience candidates. Good luck to the young'un though!

I work at a large international law firm with the main office being in London. I work in the Manchester office so I may have to do some digging to find out who can help with this but let me know if you want me to try.

I've looked into this. My apologies but this is the reply I received from the co-ordinator in London:

"Unfortunately we are moving away from ad hoc work experience due to our formal schemes such as Insight Days and Bright Futures.

However, those are only open to undergraduates, therefore I recommend they keep this in mind when the time comes."

If you want details of the firm I work for, send me a PM and i'll let you have more info.

I'll have a chat internally, I dont know what our policy is as a Group. I am a Director of our social homes building business and look after the commercial side including legals etc. We also have a legal department.

The group is massive with 50k employees worldwide which means somewhere there will be a policy and I will have to track it down.

Based in London near Victoria station.

Give me a day or two
