Hi Pistonheads

Prior to agreeing to take my job which commenced April 19, an agreement was made I would receive a salary review every 6 months . I had explained if I took the job I would be taking a significant pay cut and that I needed to receive the amount my current colleagues were receiving by the end of my first years service. (I started on a lower salary whilst I have been undertaking training.) In my letter to HR referring to the agreement I wrote I wished to receive regular meetings to ensure I remained on track in meeting the business' objectives.

However after passing my probation, in October the salary review meeting did not take place. I received various excuses for the delay and then after pressing my managers a meeting was held last week.

I was told that they were reviewing the salaries and looking to band them so employees performing my role received the amount according to the band. They said they would review my salary in April when I had completed a course ( a year after commencing)

i explained this was not what had been discussed and agreed and showed them the email referring to the agreement. They said they were not aware of this (although I think they were because of past conversations) and would go back to HR and ask about the salary agreed and increments toward this and a meeting was set up for next week.

I am very worried about my financial situation and am unhappy how they appear to be going back on what was agreed.

I would be very grateful for any advice on how to manage the situation. Any thoughts greatly appreciated

Jam tomorrow!

Very common, My solution was always to hit the job boards, interview, get offered new jole, play one offer off against the other.

A friend of mine whittled it down to it's essence when he walked into the managers office with the offer letter and told him "I will be earning £xxxxK next month. The only question is where"

You may want to be a bit more subtle, but fundamentally that's what it will take.

Why did you take the original pay cut ?
There must have been something that attracted you to your new employer - does this still exist ?

What is the wording of your "agreement" with HR in email ... I'm reading it that you sent a letter to HR wishing for something and that they they countered with a lower salary and an agreement to have salary reviews .. which then formed the basis of the contract the you signed or are these frequent reviews not in the contract ?

Does it also detail the outcomes of these reviews ? Your salary is being reviewed , indeed you state that they are reviewing ALL salaries and banding them , so they dont appear to be going back on what was said either.

A review is precisely that a review. It's not a commitment to make any change. I see nowhere in your post where you requested & your company agreed to give interim pay rises, only reviews.

You state you wan to be on the same as your peers after the 1st year. Given they are looking to review bands & complete that by the end of your first year you may well be at the level you requested at the end of the 1st year.

What, exactly, was the wording of the agreement. Do you have it incorporated into your contract of employment/service agreement?
