Company Car Mileage Allowance...multiple sites
Discussion
Sorry, I know this topic comes up all the time, but my question is slightly different.
My employer designate an office as my base and this is a 50 mile round trip, so only pay mileage allowance once I do more than 50 miles.
However, I only visit there once a month, and spend the rest of the time visiting customers and our other sites.
Looking at HMRC, could these be claimed as temporary places of work? This would mean I can claim all mileage from leaving my home?
While my employer wouldn’t pay me any additional mileage, I could claim this as tax relief if I am correct?

Yes can claim tax relief and there's a form to do it so you don't have to go via self assessment. But you'd be better off negotiating better expense policy because 20% or even 40% of 45p a mile won't make much of a dent unless you are start hitting bigger miles.
I hate these policies where they make you remove your normal commute from payments, it's not necessary for HMRC, and means that the people that live close and have a nice short commute get paid more. The people that are already committing a big long commute every day to work for the company lose out.
Alternatively change contract to home working and you won't have to remove the distance either.

Thank you for all the help, and agree with the comments on commute and living near to the office!
Can you make two mileage claims for each tax year? As I came out of the company car scheme a few years ago, I have already made a mileage claim for the difference between my 14p company expense payment and 45p, but now need to make another claim in respect of my initial point.

Sorry for the resurrection, but after 3 months of back and forth, finally got my claim sorted.
HMRC wouldn't accept my original claim, and I had to send in mileage claim forms plus copies of my expense claims. Also ended up sending them a letter quoting their own guidelines on temporary workplaces.
If you are making a claim, make sure you google HMRC mileage tax relief temporary workplace, might save you some time.
Should receive the money in the next few weeks.
