Hey guys,

I’ve been offered an opportunity to begin a rotation working out in Port Harcourt, Nigeria. This is a new project being started by the oil services company I work for and will involve me going over to the site for a rotation of 6/6 in there operations base out there.

As this will be my first rotational role aswell as working in Africa im not too sure what kind of offer I should be receiving from my employer regarding day rate & salary.

If anyone has previously done something similar could you give me some ball park figures, would be greatly appreciated

Thanks guys

It would kind of help to know what you actually do, your current level & experience.

Are you staff or contract as you talk about a day rate & salary.

I’m Working as a an Repair maintenance tech within drilling services, so like logging tools and directional steering tools. I’m a level 2 tech and have about 18 months experience. Yeah I’m staff but been told by my ops manager I will get a different contract which will have a salary aswell as a day rate for when over there

Did Port Harcourt and Warri about 35 years ago so can't help with rates now. But the same sort of thing basic salary + day rate then. Suggest you try some of the Oil and Gas expat forums for more up to date info.

Worked in Port Harcourt when I was in my very early 20's, some 27 years ago, and while in construction I think my deal was salary plus 25%. I then got all accommodation covered, plus car & driver, plus a weekly allowance to spend when I was there.

Those where the days, 40 Naira to the £ and beer was about 6 Naira, how my liver survived I'll never know

What size of company? if it's one of the big ones (Schlum/Hall/Weatherford/BH/etc) you'll likely be on rotational contract with a base salary + uplifts on top for every day spent in country - this is probably what your manager is referring to as the day rate (i.e. everything beyond you base salary).

Most of the big companies have hardship premiums which are worked out as a percentage of your salary for working in that location; you might also get some other uplifts such as a commuter bonus/field bonus/job ticket etc. If it is a large company there will likely be policy and pay plans in place.

Make sure you have kidnap insurance through your company or they're willing to pay out of their own pocket. I know most of the big companies get funny about you not using their safe/armed shuttle busses. And have some "gifts" ready for when you go through Port Harcourt airport. Robbing bds. Only place less welcoming I've ever been was France. But to be fair, once you're out of the airport, most people are nice.

If it’s one of the big service companies they’ll probably have set figures for a daily allowance and an area (risk) percentage for each country.
Feel free to PM me and I can probably give you some ideas of rates depending on who you work for.

Last time I looked PH uplift is (I think) 55% daily, plus (again I think) about $50 per day allowance. Every company varies though.

But to be fair, once you're out of the airport, most people are nice / drunk enough not to notice.

My companies rate for Nigeria is 50% uplift on your salary for days spent there.

You'll be living in a compound, some are better than others but none are exactly luxurious!

I know which company it isn’t if you’re being offered equal time smile

One of the attractions of working in these places is the tax you won’t be paying and the money you won’t be spending on general living costs, try to get an idea of that as well as the salary/day rate etc. Since you have so much time off you might be wise to get confirmation that you’d have no tax liability in the UK, from someone who knows what they’re talking about (not your employer!).

Also just be aware that moving from a UK contract to an expat one typically means giving up the relative job security you currently have. I would personally be wary given the price of oil of late.
