Could anyone tell me how difficult it is to get offshore as a roustabout nowadays?

I am looking to build some offshore experience whilst I apply for graduate offshore engineering roles, but I don't want to jump into paying for my north sea certifications if they're not taking on any unexperienced hires.

With no certs or family in the game. Zero.

If you’re a grad, lots of the big companies run grad schemes, so best looking to get onto one of them.

To get a start as a roustabout, you either need to go through an agency, in which case you are expected to have your certs in place, or get hired by a company who will put you through them.

Most companies will take agency hands for a few trips as a ‘try before you buy’ type of thing rather than employing a new guy straight off the beach.

That’s just from what I saw working on drilling rigs.

I wouldn't advise anyone to get in to this industry now, it's extremely volatile, it's lifespan is finite and it's a very un-PC industry, i'd be looking at renewable energy.

Having said that, if you are still keen then complete all of the necessary courses and start applying to agencies as mentioned above.
