Just been offered a new role for more money then what I'm on now. Not a senior role by any means but just read the contract and it says the notice period I would have to work is 12 weeks?!? I've only ever worked for companies where it is a standard 4 weeks. Is this common now for so long??

I'd understand if I was a director but this isn't it's just a standard position. Not sure how I'd bring this up with the company to say if I can reduce to 4 weeks without jeopardizing my position as automatically they will say why would I mention the notice period?

yes it is becoming a bit more common in certain types of roles and positions. I am surprised that I am not on a 3 month notice period at my current company.

Twelve weeks gives the employer a sporting chance of hiring a replacement should you resign (unless they are also on the same notice period). Four weeks gives them almost no chance. If I was the employer I would decline any request to shorten the notice period in the contract but I could be flexible at the point of resignation depending on circumstances.

I would question why you are so concerned, any new employer down the line will wait for you to serve twelve weeks notice, it is not abnormal, and you get the protection of the same notice if you are made redundant etc.

Good news for you, in the event of termination you get more money.... And higher chances of PILON/Garden Leave...

All my jobs since i left Uni 25 years ago have required 12 weeks notice, and i'm certainly not in a management/director type role.

I think mine is up to 16 weeks now, not a senior position, for year 1 its 4 weeks, year 2 its 8 and so up to a max of 16 which is where I am now.

The place I left last year was shocked to find I was on 4 weeks. It didn't make them especially happy. 3 months where I am now I believe.

Yeah, I got made redundant by Wood PLC when they took over Amec FW and had 12 weeks notice, they onely gave Statutory redundancy but the PILON made it a decent amount.

Don’t knock it, I’ve been made redundant and I’ve luckily still got 3 months of cash coming in.

I had a 6 month notice. When my boss fell out with me I was very grateful, 6 month's gardening leave!

Not to pry, but curious... Did you receive PILON plus statutory redundancy?

I believe redundancy rights only kick in after 2 years of continuous service.

Notice period terms varies with the company you are with.
My mate works in a company where his notice period is 1 month but the employers notice period increases by years of continuous service.
I think this is quite good.
