Hi guys and gals,

Just after a little help/advice before I let today’s events ruin my weekend.

So a little background.
At the beginning of February I was made aware that I along with my department were being put at risk of redundancy due to the positions being relocated to a different office ( relocation was offered but at a 5 hour round commute a day or moving wasn’t really an option, salary not worth that.)
As I am the only remote worker out of the 30 or so at risk who work in the office I often miss catch ups/meetings and all the other little bits that go with it. Not ideal but that is what it is.
Moving thru the weeks there been little information passed around, just the odd email that dosnt really detail anything, apart from interviews are taking place for those who wish to transfer or apply for the one position that is being kept ( not a position that interests me so haven’t applied )

I’ve had to chase HR to get any answers and if im honest. All I’ve really received is that a consultation will take place soon, no real meat to the answers.

Moving forward to today, I’ve received an email from a colleague to attend a meeting at the end of the month to hand over knowledge and information about my role to the team ( this is not hr based ) which leads me to believe that the decision has already been made to complete my redundancy without and meetings or consultations taking place with myself, and this has been relayed down to teams who will be taking over my role.

So I come to the main point of my ramble. Do I have a cause to be upset? Just accept that there decisions been made already, without any discussions? Has the company acted correctly, whilst not with decency?

The fact that others have been told already is more embarrassment for me. But also it’s time to face facts that I’m on a hiding to nothing.

Do have any options moving forward with this, or just accept?

Thanks all for getting this far smile

I've been the department manager in this kind of circumstance and in our company we had very strict scripts to follow. You had to use very precise wording when informing people if they were at risk of redundancy and if someone was made redundant we issued a letter before undertaking KT to others. I would suggest you need to query first - remote working isn't an excuse for being uninformed by your company. Your message gives the impression the decision is taken so regardless it's time to look to what the future could hold - look for the opportunity not the immediate problem! Good luck!

I'm under this cloud right now and...

It's like a relationship ending. The decision is made. Only one person needs to have made it. Don't waste more thought on it. Move on.

Good luck.

The one time I was made redundant I learned what a misnomer 'consultation' is; I don't know who they 'consult' with, but it sure as hell isn't (doesn't seem to be) with the individual being made redundant.

The only thing you might be able to do is have someone llok at the whole communication trail to see if they followed proper process; if they haven't you might be able to get some money out of them.

Err.... so you've NOT applied for the 1 local role being kept, and will not re-locate (both of which by the way seem fair enough).

Have you already told the company this is your position? If so, what do you expect the consultation(s) with you to be? You've clarified your intent and they have no option other than to make your redundant.

However, it might be nice if they'd officially tell you! smile

I was made redundant in 1999 after returning to work after a suspected heart attack....

Was fed up to put it mildly

Felt something was off when I came back so was looking to move on..

Found something which paid more but meant I had to relocate to London from Dorset.

Got the call to be told my face did not fit by the C Exec...about 6 other people from HR etc there.

Asked was the payoff was was told said thats fine when is my last day was told 3 months away so could handover my knowledge etc.

Said ok got up walked out saying nothing else.

left without going back to my office went home emailed in sick took 3 months paid leave the my payoff...

I had already taken up a job in London starting in ....3 months time

Best thing I ever did ended up consulting all over the UK from a London base.

My pint point even...is don't look back crack on

It's tough the first time it happens, but once you realise there's life on the other side it becomes easier.

It happened to me 3 times between 2000 and 2013, and it just meant I never assumed any loyalty from my employers and so didnt hold any to them. If you've been there any time and get a reasonable pay off it can be quite liberating.

Although as I said at the start, it's hard the first time it happens

Although I get your frustration with the situation, it very much reads like you took the opportunity put additional work onto your former colleagues by taking sick leave when you weren't sick.
I'm guessing they were justified in wanting to let you go.

Not really as i was off originally after having a suspected heart attack which turned out to be angina. I wanted to return but was not allowed as they said i needed to rest.

When i came back had me doing valuless stuff(hence my looking elsewhere)

Anyway was an enjoyable 3 months
