Hello,
In light of recent events it's entirely possible I may have a few weeks/months of free time coming up. I work as a project manager for building sites, and I don't think I'm being paranoid in thinking I won't have much to do for the foreseeable future as I'm certain we'll be in full lockdown soon enough and my sites will all be closed.

I'm not yet sure how this is all going to pan out financially as my employer is being very un-pragmatic and slow to the ever changing situation so not sure how things will work out with pay etc.

Did get me thinking though that I ride a bike daily for work and I could put those skills to use both to keep myself busy and have some money in my pocket as well as carrying out a much needed service during these difficult times.

I'm based in Surrey but work in central London so know most of London pretty well, I use my bike day in day out getting to and from meetings so already doing 50+ miles a day.

Am I being unrealistic about the difficulties in such a job or is it something I could slip into? Any advice on where to look for such a job?

For reference I've been riding nearly 3 years, full licence for approaching 2 years (been driving for 11 years) and ride a Honda NC750X which seems to be a popular courier bike anyway.

Thanks!

Not knocking your intent, but you will be joining a very long queue.

Additionally, if you really want to help provide a "critical" service, then you will need training and I am not sure how anyone is going to deliver that at the moment.

I'm not working either, at the moment, and was thinking about signing up to help the blood runners, but see above...

The only thing I would say is it might be expensive for insurance...

I think its a good idea mate, i also agree that it will be a very long list - surely your employer should be covering 80% of your salary if you are employed? us sole traders are fecked, 94 quid a week!

You could volunteer for Blood Bikes.

You'll probably need a ROSPA or IAM certificate and you won't get paid.

Thanks for the responses so far smile

If my employer tells me to stay home I could do it as a second job to bring money in, if that falls foul of the rules on government backed grants then I could just take unpaid leave from work and do the biking instead. I live in a small 1 bed flat so I'll be bouncing off the walls soon enough if I need to stay fully locked up.

If there's no paid options available I'd be happy to help out with the blood bikes (noted that it's unpaid) but I've not got RoSPA or IAM (only done bikesafe).

Well, if you do fancy it, contact your local group.

They may assess you and ask you to use your own bike.

They'll be very busy right now.

Maybe contact your local pharmacy. My girlfriend works for one and they are struggling to get their deliveries out.

I've offered to help out (assuming it covers my fuel and insurance costs).
