I need a job (sales) due to an offer falling through. Not many companies employing in the midlands but a lot are in Manchester.

Is it a doable daily commute. I know it will be a pain but desperate times require desperate measures.

I would do anything to avoid it.

That's at least 2hrs or 80 miles each way, every day. 20hrs and £150 a week in fuel + spares and repair.

Is it office based sales or field based? what would be your actual territory, any chance of home working (assuming this is all post c19).

Might be ok short term but long term, no chance.

I live at J28 on the M1 and do down to Birmingham every day, so i'm not afraid of a commute, however Nottingham to Manchester everyday would be a complete no go to me.

Especially if you were hoping for an 'office' type start time of 8:30 -9:0 ish and returning 17:30 ish

Two hours would be a very very hopeful target I think

It would be closer to 3 hours (if not more) numerous times per week.

In rush hour, that's 6 hours a day driving. That would be horrific.

Only way to do it would be to rent a midweek room - Monday to Thursday night.

The train is horrible too. It's a stopping train that goes to Sheffield before going out again to Manc. It's about 1hr 40 I think, I used to use it as I had a client in Manc, back then it was a 2 carriage train in peak and pretty horrible but now peak trains are 4 carriages.

I would not consider driving to Manc from Nottingham as a regular commute.

This - get on spareroom.co.uk and get to know the nightlife of Manchester (plus it'll be cheaper than commuting)

'Quickest' way I would assume would be A50, M6, M6/M56 link road and then M56. I drive up to Chorley from Cheshire around once a month and despite upgrading the link road to the M56 from the M6 Knutsford junction the queue backs down the M6 well before 7am in a morning and the queue into Manchester on the M56 before between Bowdon and the airport junction starts before 7am as well. Wouldn't be a commute I'd fancy.

I wouldn’t want to do it, I live north of Manchester and my parents live in Nottingham so do the trip regularly, but rarely in rush hour. There’s no easy way to do it, as mentioned, A50, M6, M56 is the best for dual carriageway/ motorway but gets busy. The most direct Route is over the Peak District but a nightmare through Glossop to the motorway both ways.

In short, I wouldn’t want to do it long term. Is stopping over a few nights a week an option?

Of course it's possible, most things are, but I certainly wouldn't do it.

Renting some cheap digs might be possible, but not long term.

Good luck with your search, nearer home.

"Through Glossop"

Eek.

Add Mottram, where a full sized, 3 lane motorway ends at a roundabout and the route continues along a fairly narrow, single carriageway, Hyde road past houses to a crossroads.

No bypass was ever built. Madness.

They were supposed to be building the Hollingworth bypass when I lived there in 1967.

It will never happen.

I'd only consider that job if...
A) they provide a car and fuel /maintain it
and..
B) commuting time is paid and part of the working day.

Or they provide extra cash to enable you to get lo Al accommodation during the week.

You'd be mad to do 6+hours driving on top of a working day

It wasn't uncommon for it to take me an hour just to get out of Manchester. I give it 2 weeks until you re-enact the film Falling Down.
