How many people are going to get to the end of this month and realise just how much money they piss away on diesel/coffee/lunch/drinks after work/dining out in the typical week?

Chatting with the other half, she's saving £50 a week on diesel, £23-£30 a week on the daily Costa, easily the same on lunch, car parking, etc etc.
For many workers I can see this adding up to hundreds of pounds which just flow through their fingers every day without even being noticed. I bet there will be some that come out of this with greater savings than they had before simply due to taking away the opportunity to fritter it away on a daily basis on stuff and nonsense.

I reckon im saving £25 per week on lunches, £20 on fuel and that's about it. But that's £180 per month which is half of the amount I'm losing in pay due to being furloughed.
I'm also cancelling the tax on the car today, so that will be another £30 saving.

I'm saving around £70 on car parking and probably the same again on food.

That said it's probably being offset by the fact I'm cooking twice a day for lunch, using more water for washing up and showers (not using the gym), whilst also having to put a heater on as apparently my house thinks all this sunshine means I need cooling down.

Saving me about 1200 a month. (I work 2 days from home, 3 in the office so travel to and from London once a week and stay a couple of nights in Hotel Merdique.)

I was paying £200 a month on petrol (but swapped cars to a diesel now, so should be cheaper ongoing), and £250 on early/late school club fees.

Made my own lunch and free parking at work, so no change on those expenses.

I think 80% salary for furlough will easily cover most people as a reasonable amount of people's expenses are getting to work and back.

That 80% is only up to £2,500 gross though.

For many people, 80% of their salary is more than £2,500 so the loss of income on furlough is considerably greater than what is saved from basic commuting costs. Also, as has been mentioned before on another thread, furlough payments don’t cover commission, bonuses etc.

Me - £35 a week on fuel, probably a fiver a day on lunch
OH - £20 a week on fuel and probably another £5 a day on Costa
16yo - Probably a fiver a day for school bus/lunch

Then probably £20 a week on a Subway at the weekend after his rugby

So by my reckoning there about £600 a month overall between us

Plus the £25 a month for the gym (council run so no payments being taken), £20 a month for Sky Sports (paused)

So a total of £650 a month ish

Probably a good job as the OH is self-employed and her income has gone completely - and from what we can see she will quite possibly get no money from the government as she was employed part-time as well as being SE last year and was her first full year tax return, went SE only in April last year frown

£150 in petrol between us.

Eating at home, canteen was cheap anyway for a sandwich/soup so prob still cheaper having something at home.

Youngest home from uni, not constantly sending him cash now.

Per month:
£45 electric for car
£63 a month on lunch
Maybe £20 a month on snacks?

Much of that is outweighed by WFH, additional heating and food. Saving about 1200 miles a month though on wear and tear on the daily, no bad thing.

Saving about 40 and 20 pounds respectivley on diesel and sarnies at work per week. Costing a couple of quid extra in electic for the little heater next to me. Donated 50 quid to the NHS PPE appeal yesterday, so kind of balancing out.

I normally cycle to work half of the time, the wife claims back business mileage, we each buy lunch only once or twice a week and rarely buy from coffee shops so we won't be saving massively.

There will be fewer small purchases here and there, though.

Ps. I am eating better lunches thanks to my wife who is a keen cook.

I’m saving on fuel, parking, lunches and stuff like that but blowing cash on other things online that I don’t normally do, plus getting food delivered from the local farm shop, which I’ve never done before.

My cars done 6 miles in the past week. I was considering getting it SORNed but I don’t think it’s worth it.

I'm still working as a key worker but I am still noticing how much money I am saving because I can't go out for lunch and buy food, well I could but I can't be bothered queuing outside a supermarket so I pack my lunch everyday.

No takeaway coffees on the way to work

I'm also noticing my shirts and trousers are slightly looser so I must be losing weight too, makes me realise how much rubbish I must have been eating.

I’ve always made my own coffee anyway and bought a lunch from a local shop so that’s unchanged.

If anything I will spend what little I’m saving in diesel on extra electric and heating.

It feels like loads for both of us.

Per week

£120 travel saved
£50 lunches
£10 coffees
£200 childcare

£380 per week. Over a year, without annual leave it's about £17k

Now I've reviwed it , it is a lot money. Long may it continue or at least I hope life will change so that many of us can work from home.

My business went fully remote a couple of years ago. Saved a fortune in sick days and pay rise requests!

Probably saving around £300-400 a month but I have had my salary cut down for a bit, so there isn't any extra money to save for a rainy day!

I'm probably saving 100 a month. Thankfully working full time from home at the moment. I think I'll be down to 60% salary in May if the lockdown continues though.

I'm going to save roughly £250 on petrol and maybe £100 on the occasional lunch out/restaurant.

I have however spent £250+ buying a pressure washer and various car washing equipment to give it a proper go myself seeing as though it could be a while! Even that will pay for itself though in months to come.
