I have been offered a new job, but I’m worried about going for it given the pandemic and a global recession that’s just around the corner.

My current job is pretty safe (food industry) and the new potential job is in a relatively safe sector, albeit not as safe as food.

I am unhappy when I am and the new job is a great opportunity for me, but it won’t be as secure as above, and also I would lose my 3 month notice period that I currently enjoy, for at least the probationary period (or is it 2 years?).

Would anyone else move jobs for career growth and progression at the moment, or would you play it safe and stay with what you know and what is most secure? Even if you’re unhappy?

I’m on the fence. Maybe it’s not about careers and happiness anymore - maybe it’s about 𝙎𝙚𝙘𝙪𝙧𝙞𝙩𝙮.

No one knows whats round the corner. Go for it. What's the worst that can happen? It doesn't work out and look for something else. 1000s of people have been made redundant and are in that boat at present.

I think being cautious is warranted in the current climate. My advice would be the following

1) find out exactly how they are going to onboard you if the majority of the workforce is working remotely, some jobs will be easier to do than others and may not face a delay...others will (I had multiple roles being discussed early in the year that are all now pushed back for this reason).

2) Does your work require any third party/government checks before you can start, again delays are happening here.

All in all if you wait for the "perfect moment" it will never happen but just be comfortable that if it all goes wrong you have some backup smile

I wouldn't worry, I declined a new contract extension a couple of weeks before the lockdown. 100's of contracts available, decent rates and I fancied a change.

2 weeks later 5 contracts within 50 miles and a few hundred people applying for each gig.

Whoops! On the upside the garden is looking great and I'm now a certified Scrum Master.
