My neighbour is over 70 and therefore in the shielding category, so has been told by her employer ( health care provider) not to work and stay at home (she is PAYE).

They however will not furlough her ? So she is not being paid and cannot, due to her age claim benefits.

Any thoughts, it all sounds a bit odd

A shielding employee CAN be put on Furlough.

From the Guidance

Shielding Employees
Employees who are unable to work because they are shielding in line with public health guidance (or need to stay home with someone who is shielding) can be furloughed.

Is there any reason ( other that being an arse) why an employer would not want to put an employee on furlough?

Bloke who drinks in my local his gaffer wont furlough him as hes the only person that he d have to furlough,

Basically, he cannot be arsed going through the process for one person.

So hes on sick pay loosing about £500 a week.
