What are the most common freelance jobs in the IT sector?

Do you do it full time or as a job on the side?

Depends what you mean by "freelance". Within IT there are two main types, contractors and what would be considered normal freelancers.

Contractors typically work for a single client on a fixed length contract with an agreed daily rate. The rate is around double the equivalent permanent role and you work for your own limited company. Contracts are advertised widely on Jobserve, LinkedIn and the good ol' cold calling.

Freelancing is working for multiple clients doing smaller jobs, build web sites, IT support, graphic design and so on. Typically the cost is per delivery. The work is shorter duration, but if you have a strong pipeline you can do multiple jobs simultaneously and it can be quite profitable. The biggest challenge is making yourself stand out from the plethora of freelancers, especially those form overseas who compete on price.

I've done a bit of both in my time. Freelancing while doing my full time job and more recently contracting as a full time role for my own limited company.

It depends upon what your objectives are.

If it’s pin money to support a car project, then it might be ok. If it’s to be your primary income, then it may also be ok depending upon your salary goal.

As the web and its development are no longer novel, wages reflect this, unless you have developed a scarce niche.
