Career change - PQS to Private Equity/Venture Capital
Discussion
I’ve been in construction for 10 years. Half of that time on the Contracting side and half on the Clients side, as a consultant. I fancy a change and may have a way into a the finance industry. I have strong financial stills, passion for business and financial markets and hopefully many transferable skills. Has anyone done anything similar?
Based on what you’ve said I’d say it was nigh on impossible to move into PE from where you are at the moment.
AIUI Associate roles for PE are even more sought after than entry roles in IB which in itself are extremely competitive. To give you an idea my nephew managed to get a role with an IB and that was with 4 A/A* grades at A-level and a 1st in Economics, plus doing unpaid internships with IBs throughout his time at Uni. I would imagine that it’s even harder to get a PE role.

I think the people who have posted above might have missed this piece of the original post.If you've got a way in, then give it a go. There isn't anything superhuman about the people who work in these places. Most of them are very smart, but some of them are just well connected.
Thanks for your responses guys.
It has been suggested to investigate doing a distance learning MBA at Warwick or similar. From someone with a Warwick MBA, it was said the MBA will provide a general overview, and serve as a vehicle to facilitate a career change- I am told many do the same, typically before their 30’s?
Whilst the idea of going back into education is a difficult one to stomach, I am looking forward to starting something new.
All in all, seems a change is possible, but need the MBA to support/assist with the change.
