My daughter is up in Liverpool and has just been made redundant from Virgin along with 10,000 others.

I'm helping her with her CV but thought that I'd just post up on here to see if there is anyone who can offer any related advice. Obviously she has a nice blue chip company on her CV and she's young and good at what she does but I wonder what her skillset can transfer to. I am thinking about hospitality but that's almost as dead as airlines. People skills seem to be the last thing that anyone needs, at least in the short term...

Any thoughts/ideas greatly appreciated. TIA

Sorry to hear that.

How about a PA, Customer Service or an Administrator?

I heard that some airline staff with basic medical training were looking at paramedic assistant or health care assistants.

Health care would be my first shout.

Get onto an agency or ring the local hospitals bank recruitment team.

Yes, she did say something about being a paramedic. Perhaps that's what she meant

Perhaps a stupid question, but what does she do for Virgin?

If she's cabin crew, face to face customer service roles would be good, along with roles making use of her (presumably detailed) first aid training.

I've worked with a few superyacht stewardesses who were ex-airline cabin crew.

Your daughter has NOT been made redundant ......... it is her role, within a company, that has been made redundant.

It can be a useful reminder to anyone who feels that it is they that have failed by being made redundant. Not their employers failure to continue their employment in this situation.

Should your daughter write on her CV "my position was made redundant....." this tells prospective employers she understands her situation, also she does not see herself as 'redundant'. Two very different attitudes.

Write down the skills she used in her job. Worthwhile sitting down for an hour and going through the details as if she was in sales, for instance, it's far more than "can sell to people".

Saying someones "role has been made redundant" is a bullst corporate phrase used by employers so they can feel better about relieving someone of their livelihood. The role hasn't been made redundant, it has ceased to exist. The employee is redundant because they still exist and still have the same skills, but are not needed. I'd feel less insulted if they were honest and said "off you fk, we don't want you anymore".

Railway role?

Customer facing roles about if that's something your daughter enjoys and a safety conscious environment no matter what role.
There are a few Train Operators as well as Network Rail; I know a few folk who have made that switch for the various companies at my location.

I was just about to post a vacancy based at Lime St with my TOC but the application window ended yesterday.

I can’t post it if it’s not on the careers page.
