Going back to work or not (driving related)
Discussion
Hello all.
It's time for one of ask random people on the internet opinion threads, sorry.
Ok so we basically move defleeted rental vehicles for a living. Not been working since the end of March.
Basically my concerns are the same as they were when we stopped as I can't see that anything has changed really.
We don't know who used or when a vehicle was last used, cleaning has been promised but I have seen what they call clean and wouldn't put any faith in it, I use A/C a lot as I have bad allergies.
We work in a group of up to 5 when travelling in a single vehicle to collect from a retail locations which can be hours away from where the defleets need to go.
I am self-employed as are the other people I work with, it is up to us to provide our own PPE, rates would be the same.
Most of the other people I work with are in a high risk category as am I and my family.
So would you feel comfortable going back or is it time to look for something else not that there is much else available right now?
Thanks.

Defleeted cars are usually sat about for 1+ month after going over their allotted mileage or age. Doubt most cars would be used anyway in the current situation.
Only takes one dettol wipe to disinfect all the surfaces you touch. Driving around in gloves is likely to be higher risk (because you eventually touch your face) and a mask is just plain stupid (unless you have passengers).

If you don't go back how long will they keep you on their books? Someone else, keen to work, may nick your contract. Just use your common sense, wear PPE and take some alcohol cleaner with you.
Or sit on your backside until the government hand outs stop, then hope there will be some work.

I'd feel comfortable going back.
Take your own alcohol cleaner/disinfectant. Wipe surfaces, etc. Wash hands regularly, change clothes, etc.
You can't fumigate an entire car each day, but you can significantly reduce the risk.
Infection rates are low
I would not want to be out of work right now. If you don't go back to your job, trust me, someone else will.

I wouldn't be that comfortable being in a car with multiple occupants for an extended period of time, even with masks on. The surfaces in your transport vehicle are more likely to be contaminated than the old rental you're about to pick up.
Once in the rental by yourself though, a quick wipe down and I'd think 'what virus'. No different to picking up a trolley at a supermarket.
I think as long as everyone in your transport is masked up I'd go back to work. Whilst not ideal, I suspect there will be people queuing up (2m apart) to replace you if you stay away for too long.
