Bonus Not Paid
Discussion
Last March just before lockdown our team of around 30 staff were thanked for all our hard work that revolved around a very busy time where the business was in transition. the boss our local Ops manager stood up one afternoon to make the announcement and that as a thank you he had ordered in £100 shopping vouchers for ever member of the team as a small token of his appreciation and these would be handed over on payday in the next 2 days. everyone was quite bouyed by this. its not much money but its nice to be appreciated.
so things went quiet for about a month and I rang my team leader asking about the vouchers. she hadnt heard anything. i let it go another month and asked again-nothing. so i emailed the ops manager to ask the question. no reply and still not heard from him. this was around 5/6 weeks ago.
so now we are over 3 months since the announcement-no vouchers.
asked a colleague last week if he heard anything. apparently the ops manager told him he had "asked about the vouchers till he was blue in the face" to a senior board member and in the circs ( I presume he means covid-19) he wont be asking again.
huh?
he said he ordered the vouchers the day before his big announcement so whats going on here?
what would you do?
I am on contract that ends in September (whether its renewed we dont know but we are busy as hell and making money) so my thoughts was when HR contact me to arrange final paychecks I raise it with them and demand a gross payment of around £120 on my final salary to achieve the same £100 net result that the vouchers would have given.
i find it says a lot about the company that reneges on such a small bonus. that the amount per person is so small in the grand scheme of things suggests that company in all honesty doesnt really give a damn about us and just pays lip service.
some might chuck in the be grateful you have a job line in this covid time which in a business that was now struggling would be a vaid point but our business is actually now doing better than this time last year.

I had this last year in my previous job (note the word previous). We lost half our number of techs in a period of 4 months and after months the company reduced our monthly sales target by 10k. We worked hard done over time extra Saturdays and manged to hit it. Next month comes and no bonus we all asked and after 2 week were told there was a error on the calculations and we missed the target by 0.5%. But it was all good as they would put in a super good vhc bonus.
3 months later I handed in my notice along with the mot tester and another tech when I left that vhc bonus hadn't even been introduced.
They even had the cheek to ask me the reason for leaving if they couldn't work out why they lost a total of 12 techs in a period of 6-7 months I don't know what would.
There was other reason lack of training and a bit rift between the back room office staff and the workshop but that finally tipped me to the leaving thing.
Its up to you if you see that as your reason for leaving but in my mind once a company does that its time to look for something new.

It sounds like 'ordered' might mean an internal order to HQ which has subsequently been stopped there, rather than the manager say, placing an order for 30 vouchers on Amazon personally.huh?

£100 isn't much, x30 = £3k, still not much. But if 5 or 10 other stores are also ordering the same, it rapidly adds up.
Selling as much, or more even, doesn't necessarily mean (more) profit. Many businesses have incurred higher costs to sell and even if they haven't, with the future uncertain now is the time to minimise any unnecessary expenditure.

Be thankful that the company is still in business etc. Hard times still to come imho.
TX.
Exactly. Even businesses doing well now may well come to struggle as those they trade with come into difficulties and start to wind down.TX.
OP had a very long-running job hunt thread not too long ago so I don't think they should be too upset when they haven't really lost anything in this situation https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&...

The Ops Manager made a commitment that he wasn't authorised to make, and therefore couldn't see it through.
He's been outed as Billy Big b
ks, and you're no worse off than you were.
It's £100. Park it and move on.
OP, either do as Doofus suggests, or start looking for another job. Anything else is very very dumb. He's been outed as Billy Big b
