Key worker pay rise
Discussion
Public sector workers on the front line of dealing with the coronavirus pandemic will be given a pay rise, the Chancellor has announced. Doctors, teachers and police officers are among those who will see extra money in their pay packet after a challenging few months since Covid-19 hit the UK.
But to be paid from their previously cut budgets. Still, I see it as a good thing.

Government to teachers: "Hey, here's a 3.1% pay rise"
Government to schools: "Oh, by the way, we're not going to fund that, so if you want your staff to have the pay rise, you'll have to fund it yourself, on top of all the money you're spending to get the schools ready for September whilst sticking to our ridiculous rules".
Random fact: Only around half of teachers got last year's pay rise.

Rest assured there will be some that moan "It's not enough" when relistically the country cannot afford it.
Take a look at what some of our nearest neighbours have awarded their hardworking key workers. France have given their valued key health workers €40 per week and Boris awarded ours £10 per week. And let's not forget that this mob awarded themselves around £800 per week for working from home. And don't forget the the tories spunked millions on a ferry company without any ferries and untold millions on PPE that wasn't fit for purpose or simply didn't exist.

Public sector salaries are funded from tax so, theoretically, the Country could afford it if people were willing to pay more tax.Edited by RVVUNM on Tuesday 21st July 15:51
But it's not a vote winner so it won't happen.
I am a domestic in a hospital and at the start of the lockdown, my 'supervisor' started to 'work from home', without any kind of IT or network connection. Not shielding anyone and no underlying conditions. Just scared herself silly and is bone idle anyway. Didn't hear a thing from her for 2 months and, as we are a small hospital, we organised ourselves.
It would really boil my piss if people like her get a payrise.

Lots of those public servant key workers won't actually get the pay rise.
The police forces will say they can't afford to give the rise, so basically the government get the good press and are todays heroes, but when it is revealed in a few weeks that many aren't actually getting the rise, it will be yesterdays news and nobody will give a damn.
Good old government.

I note they announced it the week after schools broke up, as well. Cunning. My work has put in a company wide pay freeze due to Corvid, imo it's in poor form when nearly 10 million people are now out of work and many won't return to give pay rises to those whos jobs are secure.
Public sector wages have been lagging behind private sector for many years. In the area I work in it would require 15% to achieve parity.nadger said:

Just doing their job, Shirley?Just for reference the Police recieve a pay increase which is meant to be in line with inflation every September the percentage increase is negotiated every year, if inrecall last September it was 2% off the back of many years zero increases due to austerity.
We can debate the rights and wrongs of the pay increase all.week long but my point is these increases are an annual thing across the public sector designed to keep wages in line with inflation. They are not the government suddenly getting a crazy urge to be generous to the public sector as a thank you as they are claiming in the press.
