Currently 1 year away from completing my distance learning MSc in Project Management that has a leaning towards oil and gas/construction. I have a few ideas r.e. the types of roles I can potentially land once I obtain the degree, however with the state of the O&G industry at present, my expectations and reality may not be perfectly aligned.....

I'm interested in hearing experiences from those who completed an MSc and if the career trajectory went as planned?

Great news that you’re on the final push; you’ll feel fantastic once you’ve completed it and reflect on your new found knowledge.

Re impact on the job front; many simply view it as an adjunct, a valuable adjunct certainly, rather than a means to an end. Your core competencies have been enhanced absolutely, and it may help with differentiation on any given day, but it’s usually your core competencies (and previous impact) that will win the day. Many roles may say ‘Masters required’, but many of those can still say ‘or equivalent experience’.

Best way to work out how to exploit any competitive advantage you may have acquired by completing your Masters is to see what is being asked for in the roles you’re aspiring to.

Good luck!

I am a project director in O&G by trade, though actually doing a variation on that at the moment. I can obviosuly give you some industry specific guidance.

First up though whats your background before the MSc?
Secondly if you have the basic skills, recognise major project experience is transferable, nuclear, major infrastructure projects use the same basic skillset.

Rob - Upstream O&G: Operations (engineering) for large operators. I'll send you a PM with more specifics if you don't mind?
