I was made redundant in July and have been working for an agency since then. I notice on my pay slips that my tax code is BR which I think is what we used to call "emergency tax". I did not receive a hard copy of my P45 when my employment was terminated and I understand that these are no longer supplied. Who needs to sort out my tax code ? Do I need to contact my tax office or should I ask the agency to sort it out ? Thanks.

Create or log into your gateway account and update your details in there. Haven't spoken to HMRC in a couple of years, managed all my changes for BIK and the like through there with no issues

You absolutely should be supplied with a P45 - demand this from your ex-employer. You then give the appropriate pages of this to your new employer so they know what tax code to use.

Alternatively, you can ask the agency to complete a Starter Checklist for you, which includes your earnings so far this year (which should be on your last pay slip) and details of other jobs. This then allows then to use the correct tax code.

AIUI it's not compulsory anymore. All the Employer needs to do is let HMRC know via RTI.

The New Starter Checklist (used to be called P46 I think) doesn't have a YTD earnings box on it. The OP needs to tick the box that says "This is my main job but I have had another job since 6th April" - this will allow his Employer to change his tax code from BR to W1/M1 basis which will mean he gets the benefit of the personal allowance until HMRC issue his new employer with the correct tax code information.
