The I've been made redundant' thread
Discussion
Well since its start of September and employers are finally going to have to start paying towards the staff wages(I know about NI already)
We got told the last week they will make redundancies and found out who it was this week as they want us out as quickly as possible.
Im seeing alot of people being made redundant now rather than it happening at the start of November.
So if your going through it at the moment, share your thoughts and any good news on job hunting as im sure we will all need the motivation at the moment in this very difficult market
Spoke to one recruiter and he said hes getting 750 emails a day from people looking for work!

Good luck.
I fully expect to hear that I’m redundant by next week. We’ve been in a 45 day consultation period and I’ve applied for an alternative role which I believed I had a good chance of securing. Now it seems that may not be the case.
I feel a bit manipulated to be honest. My role was dramatically changed 18 months ago. My new role was to effectively make my old job redundant on successful completion, but I was assured I’d be trained/looked after following that project. That clearly hasn’t happened.

I know it won’t be of much comfort, but while terribly unfortunate I’m sure it won’t be manipulation. We are making 1/3 of people redundant. At these awful levels, companies are having to make rubbish decisions. I have had to make someone redundant who has been a top performer, totally loyal to me; but who has a role dealing with capacity growth - which we simply are not going to need over the next few years. We could never have for seen this in March this year. I fully expect to hear that I’m redundant by next week. The very best of luck to you.
Thanks 0a, your post is appreciated. It's a rubbish situation for everyone and I don't blame them not foreseeing these unprecedented times.
With my role however I have been repeatedly promised training/career progression over the last 18 months and it kept being pushed back in order to focus on the project. The result is that even without Covid my previous role would have been redundant (in fact the company is keen to stress this isn't a Covid cost-cutting exercise, but a restructure following on from their acquisition two years ago).
At least I'll know soon, and the redundancy payout (while statutory) isn't terrible due to my length of service (10 years) and amassed holiday (27 days left).

my role was a field service and repair engineer in the cash sector, so I would travel all over the country fixing machinery from small commerical machines at bus stations all the way to very large factory based MLC and packaging systems(the cash companies who collect money from supermarkets etc have large sorting and processing setups....imagine a frozen food production line but with coin instead)
Really sorry to hear that Turbo. I would guess that cash collection is one of the industries hard hit by COVID.
I work in the transport sector (have survived round 1 as above); we have some car parks etc - cash is 80% down in share year on year since April. People have all switched to paying by card (Itself on a massive drop in volume).
On a positive note, many of my colleagues who have been made redundant have found new jobs already; it’s not all doom and gloom. A couple in the public sector, project managers at tech companies etc. Shows that there are jobs out there.

I was made redundant a month ago and have been applying for jobs in the mean time and never get a reply. I do wonder if the online job sites actually pass on my CV and letter....
I may start contacting companies directly instead.
Good luck to everyone in a similar position.
You should post what you do...you never know who is reading PH...I may start contacting companies directly instead.

I was made redundant back in March. Applied for well over 200 jobs now. As mentioned, a lot of the agencies cant even be bothered to reply to you. I think I have had about 7 sorry, you werent selected emails, 4 telephone interviews and 2 zoom interviews.
If anyone is interested, international service and commissioning engineer. Primarily with military, offshore and aviation systems. Some nuclear experience too.

I was made redundant in Feb due to brexit and while securing a role Covid came and killed it off. Luckily I managed to find an interim position and then something permanent but what I found was that recruiters are using computer programs to sift CV’s so you need to make sure your CV’s are ATS friendly.

Try companies to do with Hinkley C, Bilfinger, Jacobs, Balfours, Keltby etc google the local Bridgewater rags and see which agencies are recruiting. If anyone is interested, international service and commissioning engineer. Try BAE, Barrow in furness have had a lot of C.E. jobs coming up. Or Babcock, Devonport and Clyde I believe regularly recruit in this sector.

Are you aware of a good (UK-centric) service? There seems to be a lot of sharks out there.I believe my CV is now pretty good, and I could just be changing one phrase for another without any way if quantifying whether it is an improvement or not.

Often agencies put the adverts up just to get your CV in. Sometimes the job doesn't even exist. Had this happen far too often. If anyone is interested, international service and commissioning engineer. Primarily with military, offshore and aviatrion systems. Some nuclear experience too.

I was offered repair work with EPOS systrms with NCR, but couldn't do it due to lack of licence at present. There are roles out there fixing ATM equipment in banks, and have found CV Library and LinkedIn quite useful. Don't bother with Indeed and stuff at the bottom of the food chain. Don't know where you are in the country but there is quite a lot out there, especially now August is out of the way.Jobserve can send you automated job alerts for similar roles.
Don't let the window dressing, promises and lies or ghosting get to you. It's part of the process of a job search, dealing with some of the more arrogant elements of recruitment...
I imagine recruiters are being absolutely bombarded at the moment with very few jobs to actually recruit for.
Everyone here seems to have their heads screwed on but there's too many people I'm seeing and speaking to who don't/didn't realise that furlough was actually in a large number of cases a precursor to redundancy and treated it as a long jolly on 80% of their salary.
Best of luck to everyone who finds themselves on the hunt, I'm sure you're top of the tree compared to the types I refer to above.

I think a lot thought, to quote Rishi Sunak, there is such thing as a free lunch Everyone here seems to have their heads screwed on but there's too many people I'm seeing and speaking to who don't/didn't realise that furlough was actually in a large number of cases a precursor to redundancy and treated it as a long jolly on 80% of their salary.

the Furlough scheme always worried me, no matter how much reassurance my employer offered. I was furloughed from March till June, then worked until the last day of July when I lost my licence and left work. Since then, it's been the usual promises and lies from agencies. During the Furlough, my employer announced the inevitable cull due to COVID-19, and a few never returned. Some found other jobs elsewhere. I think this will play out again at the end of September or whenever Furlough ends. There is other work out there, but you have to kiss a lot of frogs before you find your prince, to quote Katie Price...
Things are picking up again after the holidays. It should be okay until Christmas before dying down again.
