The software job market
Discussion
Becoming dissatisfied with my current job, mainly due to the issue of money. Ignoring a promotion, my salary increases probably don't make much past inflation, and the impression I get is that others both in the company and elsewhere suffer the same. It feels like the only way to get a pay rise is to go elsewhere. Or, go back to contracting (this was supposed to be a short-term permanent role to increase my contract prospects)
So I've had my eye on the jobmarket for a while now. On the permanent side, I'm not seeing many of these fabled high paying software roles. There's quite a few roles with no salary specified, some with bands that will pay you anywhere from junior to principal rate for the same job, and others that want the moon on a stick for tuppence ha'penny. Or they want a very specific skill set (and you'll see that job advertised for weeks...). Contracting wise it was up in the air for a while with covid + IR35, so I'm not so sure on that front.
Am I seeing the industry accurately, or just looking badly? It used to be you threw your CV on jobserve and wait for the phone to ring. How are people getting roles currently?
(I switched to DevOps a year ago, which by my understanding is in demand)

Jobserve is archaic, almost everyone has migrated to LinkedIn.
Make your profile a reflection of your CV, set your status as 'open to opportunities', only recruiters on the platform can see that, not general members.
99% of vendor side jobs are advertised without a salary, those that are with a salary I can almost guarantee is only because they are trying to get a sponsorship application through for a foreign talent.
You say 'computer programmer' and 'devops' those are both quite generic titles, what do you want to be doing ? SRE type work with coding, pure coding etc etc ?
Happy to take a look at your CV and see if I can assist in any way, PM me for info, I'm not a recruitment agent but I do recruit.

Seems very common not to advertise a salary, in my current job the people interviewing me didn’t even know what the salary was. I only found out when they made the actual offer.
Still seeing lots on jobserve in my area, number of adverts seems to be increasing lately if the agency spam on LinkedIn is any indicator. Was sent one this morning to be a “firewall” in gdansk :s

Lots of demand for DevOps roles I think. I recommend you focus on your LinkedIn, use the right keywords etc, get a Premium account and be proactive to 'heads of devops/apps development' in companies that interest you. With good keywords and a well written summary the recruitment researchers should find you as well.
Thank you people for keeping me sane - looks like I need to look in the right place, i.e. sign up to LinkedIn, which I've never liked the appeal of. Needs must I suppose
(And yes IaC, whether the client understands it or not. I feel like I've gone back 10 years in process compared to my application software days!)
