Employer ppe,tooling and maintenance.
Discussion
Does an employer have any responsibility to supply ppe such as overalls, glasses boots and waterproofs?
I've got my own set but they are quickly being destroyed by the harsh environment and I can't get a straight answer to getting them replaced.
I've also supplied my own basic tools but when specialist tools (ie power or non standard) are needed they aren't supplied and I'm told to improvise which I'm not comfortable with. Can anyone offer any advice.

I would say so..
Regulation 4 states:
Every employer shall ensure that suitable personal protective equipment is provided to his employees who may be exposed to a risk to their health or safety while at work except where and to the extent that such risk has been adequately controlled by other means which are equally or more effective.

Yes, the employer is responsible if he cannot mitigate risks to you in any other way.

Some companies try to get round the PPE supply requirement by calling it workwear. HSE don't like this. There was quite a big thing about chefs and is their clothing workwear or PPE. The next bit in the Regs is just as important, training how to use it, clean it, maintain it and provide suitable storage. This stuff is so basic and clear cut and yet so many businesses just don't do it.
