lost tax details
Discussion
Hi all,
I've been with my current employer for about 18mnths, did a 3 month probation then was given a full time contract. Today I was handed a HMRC starter checklist and a letter asking for proof of identity and my national insurance number. Apparently they cant find my details on the payrole system. I wouldnt have thought anything too strange about it, but the letter also states, "Once we recieve these documents you will be offered a full time position, after completing a 3 month probationary period".
Do you think this is anything I should be concerned about, or is it a fairly normal thing?
Thanks in advance.

That's a tiny bit worrying to be honest. Does your NI number not appear on your payslip? Did you get a P60 at the end of the last financial year? if they "haven't got your details on the Payroll system" how have they been recording the tax/NI you've paid with HMRC?I've been with my current employer for about 18mnths, did a 3 month probation then was given a full time contract. However, you can check online if your NI payments are up to date: https://www.gov.uk/check-national-insurance-record

Thanks for the responses, Yes my payslips all have the correct Tax and NI details on them, just didnt understand why they needed them again?
Best not to expend energy worrying about it - incompetence, laziness or lousy systems ... take your pick. But do check HMRC have received the payments using the link I sent.

As long as your payslips and your last P60 had the correct NI details then all should be well. (That’s what gets sent across to HMRC on the monthly FPS report). The only thing I can think of is that you may not have given them a P45 when you started AND they didnt get you to complete a New Starter checklist. They need one or the other to prove to HMRC that they have been deducting the correct tax. In short, probably just them getting their paperwork in order.
