It is highly likely in the coming months I am leaving the firm I currently work for.

It is a unionised environment, annual company wide salary increases (not performance based) are due for review/actioned on the 1st of Oct each year. Every year the company doesn't begin negotiations until after this date and so the pay rise is always backdated, bit annoying, but no biggy.

However say if I start new employment in April and the payrise gets finalised in May, backdated to the previous Oct. Would I be entitled to that back pay?

As far as I'm aware you are not.

Although it would depend when your last pay is, if the pay deal goes through effective May's pay and your last pay is May then you should get it backdated. If it goes through any later then I'd imagine you are out of luck.

Public Sector?

I'd ask your Union rep. This question will have been asked every year and there will be an agreed protocol. There is no hard and fast rule- it varies from company to company.
