I left my job at the end of August and have been 'resting' since.

A few months before I left, my employer stopped providing monthly paper payslips and we were instead able to access them online.

I contacted them the other day to ask if they would let me have a copy of my P45 but they have said I'd have to pay for it as the account was 'disabled' shortly after I left and 'cannot be reactivated'.

They will provide it - presumably a hard copy - but I'll have to pay for £28 for it. Their view seems to be that I should have accessed it and downloaded it while the account was still active.

Seems a little mean but on the other hand £28 isn't going to break the bank. Thoughts?

I would imagine it's their responsibility to provide a P45 at the end of your employment!!

I think that's poor to be honest. We archive all payslips/P60s/P45s, especially P45s because they're always issued after the Employee has finished and their IT access is deleted.

It's either incompetence or laziness from your Employer's payrolld ept. However do you absolutely need the P45? Your new employer will be able to get the right tax code from HMRC as far as I'm aware.

I had this with a previous employment. One quick Subject Access Request later...

With mine, if they had been polite, would have been a fairly simple find payslips for the last two months and p60s. As they were difficult, the request was 6 years of payslips, p60s, expense claims across multiple systems and all personnel correspondence biggrin

The new employers new starter form should cover all this if you have no joy with previous employers.

+1 for a DSAR. And they can no longer charge you for them.

Is it any use if the info has been deleted?

Do you mean because of the 6 year information retention rule? If so that doesn't require them to retain P45s - they should be able to get any information HMRC request from FPS or the usual period end reports.

The P45 will not necessarily have been produced before you left. It is produced on the payroll run that paid you your last salary which is usually after you have left if you are monthly paid and leave after pay day. You dont need your P45 to start a new job it just makes it a bit less convenient so dont go paying them any money
