Help with mental health issue

A friend has recently contacted me with a work related issue.
He has an employee who has had a difficult time with their mental health. My friend has been extremely accomodating and supportive to the employee over the last six months. However, this has now escalated with the employee being abusive to several other employees and making them feel very uncomfortable in the workplace.
In normal circumstances, based on the story, I would consider this to be straight disciplinary. Are there any resources or advice to help navigate through this situation for the best outcome.
Due to the nature of this I may need to PM if someone can offer support.
