Mileage Allowance Relief over £2500
Discussion
I used to claim mileage allowance relief on my business miles using the online form, simple. Now, thanks to an increase in my business mileage the amount I'm claiming on is over £2500 so apparently I need to do it through self assessment instead.
I foolishly imagined I'd be able to just fill out that one relevant section in the online self assessment form but no, apparently I need to do the entire thing as though HMRC have forgotten everything about my pay/interest/benefits/pension/dividends etc. etc. etc. that they've already calculated my tax on for 24/25. This seems absolutely ridiculous to me and is going to be quite a lot of work, is there any way round this?

A bit more detail would be useful. Are you PAYE, self-employed, own a company etc? Your OP suggests PAYE, otherwise you would be doing some form of return for HMRC anyway. If PAYE, are you receiving anything for your business miles?I foolishly imagined I'd be able to just fill out that one relevant section in the online self assessment form but no, apparently I need to do the entire thing as though HMRC have forgotten everything about my pay/interest/benefits/pension/dividends etc. etc. etc. that they've already calculated my tax on for 24/25. I'm on PAYE, getting 8p a mile from the company now (electric car, on car allowance) and doing about 15k business miles per year. It's complicated for last year as I was partly in an ICE car with a different mileage rate but fundamentally the shortfall that I'm claiming MAR on is just over £4100 for 24/25.
