Best advice id give to a young person hell bent on pulling wrenches nowadays is to COMPLETELY side step on road stuff like cars and trucks and go for a heavy equipment apprenticeship; CAT, John Deere, Komatsu, case etc.
Way better money, prospects and respect in the truly big stuff. Six figures whist working barely more than half the year isn't completely out of the realms of possibility for a senior heavy duty mechanic in the mines or oil patches in aus or Canada.
