I'm nearing 30. Business degree and some varied work history (Supply Chain and more recently Construction Planning).

I have 2 options in front of me, first is returning to Construction Planning, something I left because I burnt out.
Second option is start over in a Medical Device factory in my area who are known for promoting from within and hope to progress internally.

Option 1 - Planning.
I was good at it and it paid very well.
Got landed a rough deal, senior guy left and I took over the day to day runnings of the project. I was admittedly out of my depth and the 2 juniors I was over were both very green and as you'd expect not much help.
I managed but it meant late evenings and weekends to keep up with the weekly cycle of reports and schedule updates. Got 10k of a payrise but felt incredibly burnt out and disenfranchised, so I left a year ago, worked Construction since but I've been thinking of going back..
Yes, I left hating it, but I don't know how much of that was just project/situation specific..
I've already chatted to my old boss, we're looking at the possibility of me rejoining to work on a fly in fly out rotation in Europe building Data Centres. Great money, flights, accommodation and transport covered - insane workload.

But, it's Data Centres, not something I'm too optimistic on, and if that goes tits up, reality is a lot of highly skilled Schedulers will be left looking for work.. It pays well, and I was good at it - did I enjoy it? Nope, it was insanely stressful and a lot of that was down to the circumstances but some of it is just inherent. I remember thinking of leaving long before I took over as lead on that job.
But where else am I going to save the guts of a mortgage deposit in a year or 2's work?

Option 2 - Factory.
There's quite a few large Medical Device factories in my area. It's menial work and the pay reflects that at entry level but they are well known for taking contract staff from the Clean Rooms and promoting internally.
I've a Business degree and experience in Supply Chain and Construction Planning/Team Management. I'm pretty confident I'd be able to progress. The work at entry level is very repetitive and the contract is fixed term, so reality is if you don't get to progress you're looking for another job in years time.

When faced with two choices, the best one to choose is the third

Write down what you're good at
Write down what you enjoy

Then find jobs that combine both. Hopefully you'll find something that pays ok and you'll be happy at work. Life's to short to sit in an office being miserable unless it leads quickly to something much better

Well see my thinking is the factory job is realistically my best opportunity to get into a position where I can find those roles..
With the Planning role, it's niche and it doesn't lend itself well to other roles in the field.. virtually everyone I know who has worked in Planning is either in that now or managing those who are.

Whereas the factory job would allow me to start with a company where I'm hoping/thinking I should be able to progress internally into those roles that are a better fit.. Of the top of my head - Production Management or possibly Supply Chain, but I'm giving up a sure thing of solid money.

Why are these two new options better than what you’re currently doing? Have you already applied for roles at both organisations and been accepted, so you now have to choose between them, or have you not applied yet?

I'm currently out of work. I left Planning to go out and learn a trade, seemed like a great idea. I was doing Electrical Instrumentation at first, but the 120km commute each way took a toll when coupled with the low wages and there's no one hiring for E&I anywhere closer.
I then changed to Plumbing with a local firm. Got on great initially, but it was very hard going. I threw my back out on Friday after being told by the boss it wasn't going to work out as he needed someone who could get stuck in quicker - aka not a first year.
So those are my 2 best options at current.

I did this. I even did a trial day but once working out the take home each month id have maybe 200 spare after all bills. One meal. One tyre. Wait a month

Get rid of car monthly or downgrade house are the way for me sadly.

I'd say no on principle to helping to create datacentres that will enable our AI overlords to monitor us and control us... but you know, Tin Foil Hat and all that tongue out

Oh no I definitely haven't strayed too far from my tinfoil hat myself, banality of evil and all that.
I had an offer for a similar role in Chicago 120k a year and it really seemed great until I realised I was going to have to explain to people that I help build DCs, in the EU at least it's not so backwards that they're not built in your back garden, same can't be said for the US.

I wouldn’t go anywhere near the medical devices job. st pay, temporary contract, maybe some vague promise of a promotion , probably also for relatively st pay.

The planning job is the better of the two, but realistically that not amazing either. I’d probably hold out for some other option.

You need to think about 'AI', will it take over any job you take? 'Planning' would be one.
