Hey,
I’m after a bit of career advice and since PH’s answers most questions I have I thought it’s a good place to start.

Work is getting me down at the moment and I really don’t see it as a long term thing anymore, but I’ve not really got a clue what to do next?

So here’s a brief biog, and any comments or advice would be greatly appreciated.

I’m 27 and currently the national sales manager for a small sports equipment manufacturer. Being a small company I’m also responsible for product development and project management.
Anyway, recently the owner brought in another level of management above me who’s binned my development plans and started penny pinching. Now I’m not after p?ssing profit away but I’m currently doing 90+hrs, & over 1000miles a week and I’m still not being responsive enough to my customers so its time to bring in more staff in my book.

Prior to this I worked for an engine manufacturer in various ½ technical (I’ve got a Masters in Mechanical Engineering) ½ commercial roles, covering both Sales and buying.

Outside this obviously I’m into my motors and I like my food.

So that’s it really. Any thoughts on what should I do next? I’ve considered becoming self employed but the ideas seem to be a bit dry at the moment so not sure about this?

Thanks,

Andrew[MG]

I think the question is do you like the job and company you work for? If you do then speak to the boss (the old one not the new guy) and say what you said here and try and expand on your ideas, if he says no then may be time to go...

Just my opinion as an older gent who's also considering a career change (I'm 28) before you jump out of it tell the biggest boss you can your plans and you never know....

I was much like yourself until about four years ago. Got totally fed up working for someone else. Long hours, too many targets etc etc, and decided to go self employed. But the question I had was doing what.

I decided to train as a wall and floor tiler. After initial training I now specialise in natural stone in marble, slate. At the end of the day I get great satisfaction when the job is done and I can look at it with some pride. Unlike my office days when all I did was shuffle paper with no actual physical result at the end of the day.

Doing tiling, it does not bother me to work long hours as you know all the profits are for you. If you want some time off you can have it when you like and you can make a decent living too.

Thanks for the advice.

Deffinately some points to consider. Got some year end meetings (and possibly appraisals) coming up, so guess I'll hold off a decision till then?

Do fancy Self employment though I ain't got the knees for floor tiling.

I'm in the same predicament! 29 years old & no idea what I want to do with my life.

Currently considering moving to Scotland to be with my girlfriend as the area I live in is completely dead for any worthwhile job, as it's Torbay it's either seasonal or care work (I don't fancy wiping pensioners ar$es or a living!!), have no qualifications to speak of & don't have the funding to do anything viable like take my class C!
The difference in Scotland being that they have subsidised training available to do class C which was scrapped in Britain around the same time they allowed the Country to be flooded by 6 million Polish migrants! They also have free education, again something which is lacking in Britain!
