Big fish small pond vs medium fish small pond
Discussion
Currently aged 32 and working as a senior commercial manager in a business supplying Fresh Produce to the multiples. The business is fully integrated throughout the supply chain and has a group turnover in excess of £500m supplying retailers in UK, canada, USA, Spain, France & Central Europe. I have fairly good autonomy with responsibility for the Central Europe business. Based in a nice part of Suffolk, i enjoy working for this company which does have longer-term prospects and living where we are... Financially I am on a fairly decent package that allows us to live a fairly good life, (my wife is a teacher).
However, I have been approached by a previous contact to come and work for his business as Commercial Director. This is a family business with a turnover of £15m. They are offering a package more than double my current one... I am confident that I can do the job. The other major factor is that it is based in Scotland. However, it is a beautiful area (Perthshire) and we could have a fantastic quality of life. The wife and I spent last weekend up there and loved the area; plus we were both at Uni in Edinburgh and still have friends up there...
My only query is where it leaves me career wise as financially it is a no-brainer...
Anybody else made a similar move from large multi-national to much smaller family business???
Cheers
Charlie

So you would leave an established 500m turnover company for a much smaller one (although 15m is not to be sniffed at) and move to the opposite end of the country.
I would say career wise you cannot lose. Your CV with that on it says you are prepared to face challenges, take risks and be flexible in where you live as well as give up the security of a big turnover company.
As long as the work will progress your career in terms of skills etc. then do it.

Look at the prospects for growth of the small company in Scotland. Talk to the owners about where they want to go with it.
Depending on what you want to do with your life it may be an opportunity to have more control and feel more involved with company growth etc.
If you just want a 9-5 job and more money, then maybe you should tell them that, they may want you for what you used to be.
Not knocking, just a thought.
Otherwise hands down Id do the smaller job. More control, wider range of things to get involved in, plus taking a small player into the realms of the big boys is a nice experience. Being a cog in a machine isnt good. Be the machine itself
