A mate has offered me a position of joining the most hated people in UK and joining his business as a short term thing until another IT job comes up.... so its win win for both of us (hes a one man company at the moment).

I will be looking at sales and IT recruitment, sales is his main side but he asked if i would look at IT..... I have warned him its a st time in the industry to do IT, hence looking at both instead of just IT.

So whats it like to do?

Whats the money like?

I have no morales or a clean conscious as that was surgically removed when I worked for an investment bank.

Has your mate not given you any indication of the pay, considering he's offered you a job?

I've been doing it 7 years (IT Rec) and wouldn't recommend going into it at the mo. The money is really good to start with (its easy to be earning £50k+) however very few really make it to earning really decent cash (£150k+ IMO) without having to set up their own agencies which can cost a lot of capital. It does depend on which side you intend to do (either contract or perm - contract you get a steady income from commission but it takes a while to build up, perm is feast or famine every month depending on how you've done). In the contract market agency rates are getting squeezed to silly levels now and its ultra competitve, perm is still sensible and theres good money to be made. I wouldn't recommend the industry for job security though, I've seen people go from top billers to being performanced managed out of businesses within 6/9 months before - it can be very cut throat...

Oh and the market is rubbish at the moment, so it would be extra though starting out now.

He pulls in anything up to 25k a month..... minimum of 5-6k..... tho its his company and he has been doing it for 8 years and has all the contacts.

But I doubt I would get a salary (or a small one) and working off commission for him.

Just wondering what its like for an amateur to join and what I can maybe get per month.

Oh the other thing to add is that because you'll be paid a percentage of the money the people you're placing get paid so pick a market thats well renumerated or you'll be stuck with the same hassle and fussyness of clients but earning a fraction for the effort.

Its only a go between job (he knows this and its his idea) whilst i get back into the IT contracting/permie world.

So not worried about that and the people I would be placing are in the 45k+ a year bracket so should be reasonable money.... I think.

Only for a short period of time while my pimp sorts out Singapore..... and the other pimps sort out London and Europe.

Once that comes through i leave.... hopefully i dont get to like it too much or make too much money otherwise i might not want to go back to IT.

I did recruitment for 4 years - IT into investment banking, swiftly moved into IT when the crunch hit!

while the money was good, the work life balance sucked, I was regularly working from 8 - 8, and whereas I'm sure some ppl will scoff at me saying that's nothing, i got sick of it.

Either way, good luck with it!

I briefly went from being an IT Contractor to IT Recruiter in January 2003. I worked like fk to get that job - a total of 7 interviews which included presentations to the director and alsorts.

They started me off on a pretty good basic (for Manchester) of 25K as I'd really impressed them.

Sadly it all went a bit wrong after that. The IT market at that point was absolutely on it's arse and I wasn't allowed to take any initiative at all - it was just cold-calling hundreds of companies - the people I was calling were harrassed and busy and I could tell I was just pissing them off. That, however, is the nature of the job and you just have to get on with it.

What really blew it for me though was how pissed off I was getting with seeing people far less talented than me in nice, cushy IT jobs.

I left.

I think if the market conditions hadn't been so bad that it would have been ok. But looking at the developing economic situation I wouldn't touch it with a bargepole.

I understand.... but his main business is Sales and Marketing people and not IT.... I have told him IT is on its ass, hence my issue getting a job.

This is short term, so what would be the issues of doing it short term to keep the brain occupied?

Would these incredible figures being quoted be the same guys ringing me on a daily basis to see if I have need for temp staffing at £9 an hour?

I am amazed if it is true that you can ear £50-£150K from minimum wage slaves.

i have a mate here that owns the company that has the rights to provide flight-side labour to the airport (baggage handlers, cleaners, drivers, etc all low end pay) he earns significantly more than 50 - 150k.

ok.... after talking wit my mate it seems like im on commission only.....

but the commission i get is 50%, so if i place someone on a 40k job, I get 5k for doing so.

Cool.... so im now going to spend all day being someone i hate and probably earn fk all..... come on real job where are you...
