Just had to cut my working week to 4 days by 'voluntary' purchase of more holiday out of my salary....

....obviously this is nothing compared to some who have lost their jobs. But it is bad timing for me as I have just bought a new house and am forking out for a wedding/honeymoon this year.

I don't bloody care though! I am just frantically listing lots of things I can get up to on my Friday's off. What would you do given this double-edge sword opportunity?

Boring part of head says go get another job to work on the Friday - maybe something the complete opposite of what your normal job is e.g. bar work, gardener or something

Fun part says restore a car or make a track weapon out of putting a Veyron engine in a metro

Brilliant idea if you ask me !! People at my place can choose not to work during school holidays so just work 'term time' - I would do this but unfortunatley don't have any kids.

It is a sensible way to do things and certainly reduces pain for both parties! Plus, chucking all your best staff out now does not leave you in the best position when the up-turn comes.

I'm thinking of watching About a Boy to get some inspiration for what to do with my 'units of time'...

i am looking at a 5% salary reduction, which wouldn't be too bad but as our bonus and all overtime/antisocial payments have also been chopped i'm going to be down around 20% of gross salary.

i'd gladly swallow this in return for friday's off, but i am still on a 5 day and have to do all the overtime/antisocial hrs for free frown

Current contract comes to an end on the 31st after a 3 1/2 year run witht he same company.

Treating myself to 1 month off - not even going to start actively looking for work until mid April.

Nothing wrong with enjoying your time off!

The wife is expecting a very tidy home...

I have long said that everyone would be happier and more productive if we all worked a four day week. This would also reduce congestion, emissions, stress, and many other social problems, while at the same time strengthening families and thus reducing anti-social behaviour.

I think the four days might be longer days, but a more motivated workforce will accomplish the same amount of work easily IMHO.

4 days on, 4 days off would be perfect. job sharing with someone else would double productivity and employment, and halve the amount of traffic on the roads as half the country will be snoozing during rush hr smile

Some of my clients do 8-5.30 Mon-Thu then 8-12 on Friday, which is nice.

I agree completely with your suggestion!

OH's place works 6:30-4:15 Mon-Thu and Fri is optional overtime. The overtime sheet is passed round on a Tuesday and anyone willing to work, if there is any, puts there name down. Then everyone gets a nice 3 day weekend.
