Hi

I'm a long time lurker but haven't posted too much here.

I have an interview tomorrow for a placement year as part of my Computer Science degree. The role is in internal IT support.

One of the questions they are going to ask is "List 3 things about yourself that are bad". I'm stumped as to what I can say for this.

Any ideas?

Thanks

"I lurk on internet forums and ask questions people can't answer?biggrin"

I would think you need to ask those closest to you for an honest answer.

Why do they ask stupid questions like this at interview? Does it have a bearing on whether the guy can do the job or not?Surely for every formulaic question there's a stock answer...? Is it just to give the HR department something to talk about afterwards..?

Say something personal and slightly amusing (but nothing that makes you sounds like a mentalist!), like "my hair doesn't always go the way I want it to" - it will make you stand out amongst a swarm of other dull answers.

When I went to my last job interview I was asked "if you could change one thing about you what would it be?" I quickly replied "my hips" and the interviewer nearly spat her coffee - I got the job and afterwards she told me that answer was the most honest of the day!!

Good luck

Use mine: "wine, woman and song". Say it with a straight face and they will think that you're a dried up, reformed character with all rashes cured!

Having been the interviewer previously, I HATED asking this question, but my hand was forced by HR who now seem to want to control all questions asked in an interview, to centre them around their idyllic little world where everyone is a motivational team player etc etc.

I think I was a little bit sick in my mouth everytime someone said 'I work too hard' or 'I just can't stop till the job is done' etc etc. The guy who actually identified the fact that his degree didn't mean he knew how things actually worked in a real industry got bonus marks. The guy who said he gets grouchy when he gets hungry definitely stood out too.

My ideal answer that I'm not sure I'd be able to pull off with a straight face in an interview situation:

Q: What are your weaknesses
A: Kryptonite.

Don't do what he does on Trainspotting and take speed before your interview.

1. I hate stupid fkwits who ask ridiculous, contrived questions in interviews.

You won't need 2 or 3, you mark my words.

There are 2 points to the question

- do you have self awareness?
- are you an individual?

We didn't ask this question, but having just recruited 11 placement students the students that think past the 'text book' answers stand out a mile.

my favourite is case studies....
...ask question
...wait 5 min whilst they think up some idealistic methodology about collecting research etc
... then re-iterate that you need a number in the next 20 min and Google this or research that wont cut it!

the ones that get through this are usually good
biggrin

good luck

Tell them you have a propensity for taking employers to the Employment Tribunal. I think you'll find that they will agree that is a bad thing...
