What's the view on this? I'm tempted to as it will add credibility to my CV as it shows my past positions, recommendations etc which clearly haven't been doctored for a particular application as I work in a fairly specialist technical IT area. However, are there downsides?

Do you folks do it? Opinions please :-)

I've not done it, but I see no reason why not, I suppose.

Certainly, of all the plethora of networking-type sites, that's the one which strikes me as actually having a decent bit of credibility.

I'm not in your field, but I always did notice a correlation between customers inviting me to LinkedIn, and their complete lack of professionalism / turnover.. For me, I'd leave it, but if you think it will sell you, then go for it!

If your cv came with linked in on it, I'd have my doubts. Peer reviews are worth st, a linked in recommendation is worthless.

This is what I was wondering. I only joined LinkedIn 2 months ago as I never relly saw waht practical use it was. Now I'm a member, I still don't see any benefit. Okay - it's pleasant to see what old work colleagues are upto, but apart from the curiousity aspect, it all seems a bit futile.

Its good if you are the type that likes to network but I find it more akin to facebook, frankly in the industries I am involoved in we like to do that teh old fashioned way of using the phone, email etc not via some introduction agency.

Interesting thought.

I'd probably put it on my online CV, but not the printed one I mail in. My printed CV is terse, and has a single (simple) link to the online one that contains more detail should the reader want it.

Not necessairly true, if you know who the person is giving the recommendation. It might be a case that you never knew the person you were looking at knew another person whose opinion you respected.

I find LinkedIn a helpful tool (i am in recruitment!), especially the recommendations part.

As for putting it on a written CV, i'd say no. That's a professional document, if they want to look, fine, but what are the advantages of putting it on? If you think there's more info on LinkedIn than your CV then you need to make your CV stronger.

Also, if it's going to companies, no hiring manager is going to take the time to log on and check out your profile, you need to make sure everything they need to know about you is in front of them and screaming from your CV, especially now.

I work it the other way round.

I might offer my LinkedIn profile to someone as a precursor to sending my full CV. My LinkedIn profile gives an overview of my career; if someone is serious or wants more info, they get the proper CV.

Little point in sending someone a comprehesive document with details of a location which contains less info.

I'd say not on CV but perhaps on covering email? I think it depends on the role you're applying for too - some companies it might be more relevant - Linkedin seems to have a lot of IT/Tech so maybe more relevant there?

It would also depend on how complete your profile was - would look pretty st to direct someone there then for it to be half-complete!
