Lecturers offered 0.3% pay rise....and reject it!

Is it just me.
I don't get a pay rise this year, my OH doesn't get a pay rise this year, actually I can't think of anybody I know who is getting any sort of pay rise this year.
Yet Lecturers seem to want 8%!

Now unless it's part of some "Raise the Pay to attract the brightest" which they have been promised..... I see no evidence of that.
So is it just me, or would you take the 0.3% and go "Ta very much."

I used to work at a Uni (not as a Lecturer though) and can confirm that most live in bubble and if it was not for Universities would simply be unemployed.

I think this thread is very unfair to a fine body of workers. These people have to put in 5-7 hours a day most days of the week for 36 weeks a year. They are looking at penury when they retire on their gold plated inflation index linked pension. I don't think 8% is nearly enough for these captains of academia.
If i were bright enough, and thought I had a few good books worth of ideas, I sure as hell would try and be a prof. Learning is fun, and explaining things is fun, and being a know it all is fun. Plus you get big dinners, and if you pick your college well, an excellent cellar at low prices.
Maybe we should offer them 8% but only if they all take a test, and the ones who do worst lose their jobs to pay for the res?

I would suggest thats from the unions, none of the lecturers I work with would expect or complain about a lack of a pay rise in the current climate. If it matters, we work in an area where we came from the "real working world", but that can be said about many lecturers. Like anything else, if its so amazing, apply yourself and get a job, although I think you would be somewhat surprised. The old days of academics just tootling around doing not much, are on the whole, a thing of the past, and were never present in many positions anyway. Universities are getting rid of staff like anyone else...

Interesting that the BBC say that 0.3% has been offered as that isn't what is being reported, to my knowledge, by any of the unions or the Uni themselves. Negotiations started in March and are expected to end in August. UCU are just being arses basically.

Oh if only, if only. One word. Tenure. We've got a few Professors who were offered Tenure to entice them to a new Uni in the 60's and they're still there. 1 hour a week, can't get rid of the buggers.Then we get onto those teaching the Arts degrees......

Well obviously. But the Unions are representing someone or they wouldn't be involved. If lecturers are not in control of the Unions representing them. They need to stop being associated with the Unions and kick them out.Same will happen as every other union negotiation in HE, the unions will huff and puff, the Uni's will tell them to sod off and it'll end up as the first Uni offer (if any). It keeps the unions in business though.
