You often hear about the workshy raking in vast amounts from the state for doing fk all. Here's another side of it.

My 18 year old son has just finished a part-time college course to improve his maths qualification, and is starting a full-time engineering course in August. Meantime he's trying to find a job to keep him going until then. .Not easy at the moment (as I know - I'm facing redundancy myself). Even MacDonalds aren't recruiting burger flippers at the moment! He's had a couple of part-time jobs, but they ended.

So he signed on at the local jobcentre. He wanted help in getting a job, but also to find out if he was entitled to any allowances.

The jobcentre staff have been as useful as a concrete parachute. Rude, unhelpful and unwilling to help.

He signed on, and then got a letter from the jobcentre to say that he was entitled to zilch. Nothing. Not a penny. He wrote to find out why, and got a phone call to say that his claim had been incorrectly input as a claim for contribution-based JSA. He has of course no NI contributions to speak of, so no JSA. He was told that the error would be corrected and his claim processed.

He got a call on Friday to say that his claim was refused as he was a full-time student. When he called to say that he wasn't, he was told to produce a letter from his college to confirm that he wasn't!

So he now has to produce evidence to disprove a negative banghead

He's in dispair and I'm getting the same way.

No doubt if he were a gay, junkie, alcoholic asylum seeker they'd be throwing money at him.

fking jobsworths! He is now considering emigrating rolleyes

He's thinking of emigrating because he can't get dole-money?

Wish him well from me!

Tell him to keep his head up.

I'm not much older than him, but my life has finally started to change for the better.

If he doesn't give up he will get through this bad patch.

Yep, that about sums it up!

I was forced to sign on for the first time in my life last year and it's not been the nicest of experiences.

The majority of the staff at the local centre are rude, unhelpful, judgmental and down right ignorant. Even the majority of the security guards are jumped up, judgemental types...

Even the phone staff were rude rofl

Perhaps I should have added one of these rolleyes to my post.

I can't imagine why anyone thinks they have a better chance of being owed a living abroad than they do here.

'Chin up' to your son! I'm quite sure he'll get a good job before too long - he sounds like a switched on cookie.

Soon he, too, can work like a dog to contribute to the handouts to the workshy, fat and feckless that our 'welfare' state has seen fit to tax us to death for.

Mate of mine was laid off in December. Worked since 16 in the same company, he's now 42.
No work to mention of locally, he's applied to the shops, factories even McD. Now has been told he has to give up his flat as it's 2 bed and move to a 1 bed that will save the grand total of sod all of the rent and incur all the costs of moving and decorating / carpeting etc.
Ridiculous, payed into the system for all his working life and gets sod all.
Savings just about gone now prospects not looking good!

I'm in a similar boat, but atleast the job center to say they where refusing his claim, they put my claim on hold without telling me so I had to ring them to find out what was happening. I need a letter to say I left my course which adds the vagueries of the postal service to the ineptitude of the job center.

I can sympathises with your son in many ways. When I was that age. No one would employ me. I spent 2 years trying to get a part time job. Eventually I had to go on something called the 'New Deal' eventually got a job from that. Then had to leave said job 5 months later. I'm now 3 jobs down the line from that one. Tell him to keep at it, it will work out eventually.
Good luck.

You would think the system was designed to only work if you are screwing it.

The very name Jobcentre is a misnomer. The only reason any job adverts appear there is that they do not charge a fee. The "advisors" have practically no experience in getting jobs for themselves, therefore why do people expect any advice of value. It's really just a big con trick and the Government could do a lot worse than fire their sorry arses and employ people with real life job seeking experience.

What like recruitment agencies?

They almost rank up there with Estate agents.... They almost always are friendly and chummy towards you to get you on the books promise to send your details off to a company and then hear nothing back, not even bad news... a simple case of no they dont want you not enough a, b and c so you can improve... no you get the cold shoulder and not even a return phone call/email.

I found out one hadnt even sent my details off, his colleague did and an interview the next day was sorted....

note... I said almost always... there are some good ones out there...

I wish, but sadly no. wink
The JSA I get doesn't pay for my basic house bills, never mind anything else.

Do you have a local economic development agency? They're normally on the ball for helping out with advice, interview techniques, support and searching for vacancies.

If he's really in despair over this then I despair for his future. Whilst I admire his gumption in trying to get a job, to be in despair & thinking of leaving the country because he can't get dole money for a few months....well I really don't know whats going to happen to him when he has a real problem.

Tell him to pull himself together & make the most of 3 months off.
