I've got an interview this week through a recruitment consultant.

Firstly, I've only just seen the job spec (It has just occured to me that I've accepted an interview for a job that I didn't know what it involved. My fault) but more importantly the CV they've re-written doesn't really resemble me at all!

They've got my job title and duties wildly incorrect, my education information incorrect and just about everything about me is wrong. Things like I've got a degree when I haven't.

I didn't hear about the interview until well after the close of play on Friday (got a call in the evening about it) and it is rather close. It was suggested I have a copy of my own CV back to prep myself.

What would you do about it? I've contacted the consultant and they're not available at the moment.

I don't want to go with a false CV, and the more I hear about it, the less I want to do with it. I don't want this company to think I'm a lier and un trustworthy.

Is it expected for consultants to really change your CV?

Hi Green Fairy. Take 2 copies of your latest CV to the interview. Hand a copy over at the beginning and keep a copy in front of you for reference. If they ask why the CV provided by the agency is different, say that this is the one that you submitted to them and any changes were made without your consent.

Thanks for your advice Gremlin!

I did just that and it went well.

Unlike my other interview today where they turned me down as I would be scared of talking to strangers. Apparently.

Anyone who knows me knows that talking is my favourite past time. I'll talk to anyone. I am that person who will chat to old people at the bus stop (should I ever take a bus) or chat to people in queues.

Plebs.

And recruitment agencies still don't see why people don't like them! One job I went to Birmingham (from Leeds!) to be interviewed for, they had sent the CV for someone with the same name as me (and it really isn't a common name) but there was so little detail on it that it only became clear half way through the interview that we weren't the same person.

Errrr definitely not to the extent of making stuff up, adding a degree!! What kind of shysters are these people? Do they not think that it would be uncovered?

Sounds like a really foolish recruitment operation, who deserve to lose their contract with the hiring company.

Have seen similar TBH. If a candidate came to an interview with a different CV from that which we had received from a recruitment firm I would exhibit no surprise whatsoever.

ETA: I would also suggest we stop using said recruitment firm. wink

Utterly out of order. You need to be upfront with the potential employer. This is precisely why we send unedited versions of our candidates CVs across to our clients. We might make layout/formatting/content suggestions but it's the candidates responsibility to update accordingly.

If the agency is a member of REC, you could report them. The worst that could happen is that their membership is revoked (unlikely anyway) but it's these type of agencies/consultants that give the industry a bad rep.

This is the very reason that I have set up my own business, employing people who have worked in industry to find people jobs rather than typical recruitment consultants.
Not all are that bad, just some are so hopeless they give teh whole industry a bad rep.

It seems like it was a contributing factor for not getting the job.

They didn't like the fact the things I said, and had written in front of me were not the same as what they had in front of them. I had even sent the recruiters an updated version (ie correct) but it hadn't reached their client in time.

Great eh?

(not that I fancied the job all that much, but it would have been ok for 18months smile Apparently they didn't expect people to stay much longer)
