I'm about to start uni studying part time for a media degree. Other than that I work in a shop, I will be working for my degree for possibly 6 years so would like a different job that offers some sort of career prospects. I'm hard working and dont mind starting at the bottom (as is expected) I also dont mind travelling.

I like getting out and about and meeting new people. i just wanted to know if anyone had any ideas that I didnt know were out there or might have overlooked.

Thanks for any help you can give and if you want to know anything else just ask.

It's hard for anyone to comment - in this market it's a case of applying for anything you see that you fancy. But if you are studying 'Media' wouldn't you be best looking for a job where whatever 'media' is applies?

Are you interested in sports and want to work in the 'media'? If that's the case, drop me a line and I might be able to help.

Are you looking for a job whilst at university? Your post isn't that clear.

Sorry for being unclear. My choices are to study full time for 3 years or part time for 6, if i study part time it'll be one day a week leaving me the rest to work. If i study full time it'll be 3 possibly 4 days a week leaving not as much to work.

I'm honestly not sure what to do. If a decent opportunity came up i'd study part time, if not though then i'll go full time and just not have a lot of money for 3 years. Even if I do decide to go full time i'd like to use my spare time to do something that will help me upon graduation. Also I find shop work very tedious, I enjoy getting out and about but also having a job more active, and that requires at least a bit of thought.

I'm currently working part time in photography to as when I bought my camera I thought i'd make it pay for itself and have worked through the summer photographing football tournaments for a company.

Can you not get a student loan and things? I would say get working with a media company for one day a week as free labour and work your socks off. Then hopefully they will offer you a full time job after Uni. It worked for a friend he now flies all around the world as a camera technician

I'm not 100% sure where I want to get out of it at the end but I'm not wasting 6 years and in what way did I say i wanted a piss up, I rarely go out at all, also The whole point of this post is that I dont want to work in a shop, why do people post when they dont even read what your saying. I will be applying for a student loan but would like to get some related work experience in the time i spare or at least use it to work in a job with some chance for progression.

Why are you studying media?

Most decent media jobs (not that there are many left) look for non-media graduates anyway.

If you to make things (ie films or tv) you will get further, more quickly by trying to get a foot in the door somewhere as a runner. You will learn more in 3 months in a busy production company than you will in three years on a media degree course.

If you want to make films, study film making at Beaconsfield at the film school there (google it).

Failing that, video equipment is so cheap now, and powerful editing available for mac or PC - just get out there and make some short films, or short documentaries, or pop videos or whatever it is you want to do.

Having a showreel of things you have made is worth 1000000 x a media degree (unless your showreel is really, really bad)

Good luck!

i slightly agree with you but the reason was that I enjoyed it so much at college. I also studied Film at college and enjoyed this so I was hoping to that I would find a more precise area i'd like to work in whilst I was studying. So that I knew where I wanted to go once i graduated.

I am now swaying towards the idea of not going and starting at a firm as a runner but where to start? I live in Leicester, would i be better in London or should I start here with one of the very few, small companies who very rarely have jobs and are often given to students studying media.

London.

Without a doubt.

Even there, work is not as thick on the ground as it once was. The quality of production is, IMHO, scraping the barrel.

Where I would have been directing a BBC factual show with a two man crew, researcher and runner, now it will be a director operating the minicam with on board sound recording etc.

Just lowest cost production - which is why most tv is piss poor.

That is why I got out of it.

If you love film making and want to study, try the national school of film and television.

£8000 a year, I was trying to avoid more debt smile I'm looking around at different places to start now and will be sending off some CV's asap to see what comes of it. No harm in taking a year to see if I can get started somewhere whilst I develop my photography too then if nothing comes of it I can always go to uni then, or i'm just not trying hard enough.

Thanks for the help, any more advice much appreciated

well i've now decided to take at least a year to try and get myself some media related work under my belt. If all goes well then i'll stick with it and continue working hard to get to where I want to be.

Now for a bit of help, does anyone have any good ideas as where to start, i've considered littering London companies with my CV's so to speak but other than that i'm pretty clueless as to getting on the ladder with no experience.

At A-level I did media, graphics and film so have some experience in all of them including making a short film, I also do quite a bit of writing and have just started writing reviews for an online review site. So a magazine is definitely a possibility.

thanks for the help already received, it has opened my eyes a lot to what a degree can and cant get me, considering 3 out of 4 of my friends who have graduated havent got a relevant job now.
