Anyone got any good websites or example covering letters that I can have a look at to get some ideas to give a decent professional overview on my skills and experience?

http://www.i-resign.com/uk/jobseekers/

Quite a funny, and yet serious website.

A covering letter should be a tailored response matching your demonstrable skills to the key requirements of the advertised role.

Why does no-one put any effort into anything these days? frown

What if there is no role and you are applying to a company that could have several vacancies from developer/support/tester/architect?

Would you send 3/4 covering letters, one for each one?

Are you being deliberately obtuse?

If there are no published vacancies, the letter will simply be an introductory note briefly setting out how you feel you can enhance that company's 'performance' in each of the areas mentioned. Keep it brief though, as the chance of anyone reading a long speculative application is very slim.
