A friend of mine at work has been told that her department (which consists of two people) may be facing redundancy. She had a meeting today to go through some things - most of which they didn't really answer - but she asked if voluntary redundancy was going to be an option and they said no...
Does a company legally have to offer this to you or can they say that the choice is up to them and if you want to volunteer then tuff?

They don't *have* to offer voluntary redundancy. It's a choice the company can make.
It depends on the company's situation as to whether it's offered - voluntary redundancy can cost a lot as it's obviously in the interest of older people on final salary pensions who have worked for the company for years.
On the other hand, it's a 'friendly' way of getting rid of people as you're asking rather than telling.
But they are under no obligation to offer V.R to you.
